🥋 My Martial Arts Story
Hi, I’m Matt – Head Coach at IMPACT Martial Arts in Wimborne.
My martial arts journey started when I was 14; I’d been bullied at school for years and, after watching The Karate Kid with my mum, I asked if I could learn martial arts.
I was lucky to find a really good Taekwon-Do school near where I lived... so I enrolled, trained hard, eventually earned my black belt and went on to become a coach.
Years later, after escaping a knife attack while travelling in Australia, my focus changed. I began expolring reality-based self defence and spent the next 10 years studying different systems, eventually qualifying as an instructor in Tactical Edge, Escrima Concepts and SPEAR®.
That journey also led me into JKD, Kali and a much broader exploration of martial arts, self defence and different training methods — something I still continue today.
I’ve been fortunate to learn from some incredible instructors along the way, including Phil Lear, Mark Davies, Steve Tappin, Tony Blauer and Jason Boh.
Martial arts has been a huge part of my life, but the part I enjoy most now is helping other people build confidence, develop themselves and discover what they’re capable of. Who know's...maybe one day I'll get to be someone's Mr. Miyagi!💪
Everyone has a different reason for starting...
👇 So what’s your martial arts story?
Do you already train? What got you started?
Or, if you’ve never trained, what interests you about martial arts?
Tell me in the comments — I’d love to hear it!
