Lockdown has made me a pro at maximising my alone time. I’ve taken up kintsuge [I got a kit], collaging [surprisingly well!], drawing [unsurprisingly badly], and puzzles.

It’s been fun revisiting these activities from my childhood and reappropriating them as my adult self.

Looking back on it, the reconnection with that creative child has been an incredibly powerful one. More than I would have thought when I took up puzzling to prevent boredom.

It’s obvious though: one of the big elements of psychotherapy and healing is connecting to and integrating the inner child.

Something I was unwittingly doing in those hours of drawing and puzzling. Which is also, the point of satori. No? To do without doing.

And, now that I am no longer 8, with the added bonus of a vodka martini. 🍸

Do you feel TRAPPED by your anxieties?

The reason why anxiety takes such total control of us is because the story it tells us ends with the catastrophe, whether that is a break up, a car crash or the house burning down.... we paint ourselves into corners.

So we need to pace ourselves through the story and out the other side. Like this:

If something is really triggering you and you’re feeling stuck, say you have to deliver a project at work or go on a date with someone you really like and it is giving you hellish anxiety, run the story past the delivery of the project or the end of the date and give it an ending that you can actually commit to doing.

Paint yourself a way out with a simple plan like coming home to a cup of tea from your favourite mug, sitting in your favourite spot on the sofa ☕️ 🛋

After the event you must do this thing you promised yourself. This way you achieve two things – you naturally combat the anxiety and you teach your fearful inner voice that it can trust you, in so doing you build up trust for yourself.

Human, I hope this helps you. I know it will. This is how I helped myself.

What would be your comforting end to a (potentially) stressful day?

Have you found other techniques and thought exercises that help you move forward when you’re in a tight spot?

I’d love to know!

In honour of M*sturbation month, it’s a good time to find new mirrors for self-reflection and self-exploration.

If you are feeling disconnected from your feminine self, here is a lovely little meditation to deepen your connection with the divine feminine that resides in us all:⁣

In many traditions the moon is considered to be a source of powerful feminine Yin energy. In Qigong absorbing feminine frequencies from a natural source such as the moon is considered the most powerful and direct route to replenishing that energy.⁣

🌑 This little practice is called the Moon Mirror 🌑⁣

Ideally sit in the light of the full moon and close your eyes. Imagine the moon as a cosmic mirror. Visualise the moon light entering your subtle body through a point in the middle of your forehead and picture the full moon hanging at the centre of the space in the middle of your head. Imagine the moon as a mirror reflecting light into very corner of your body-mind. Direct this light especially to the dark areas of your life and reflect on the perfection of these lessons and events. As you inhale pull the light into your body, nourishing you. When you feel complete draw the silver light down the front of the body to your yoni and store it there. 🍊⁣

Today I’m touching on the body and how important it is. A lot of my work is reconnecting people to their body, I find so often that we have lost the trust we had in our bodies, for a few reasons:

1. We have absorbed that the body is just a blood bag that has no purpose other than carrying us through our physical existence

2. The archaic idea that the body is not to be trusted, that our physical urges derail the rarer more refined ideals of the spirit

3. We have been taught that it is the mind that matters, that thought is king and

4. We don’t like pain, so instead of viewing it as a sign post we prefer to disconnect from it entirely. So much anxiety, shame and healing relates to a chronic disconnect of mind and body.

How do we rebuild our trust in our physical body??

Anyone can tell you something is good for you or bad for you, but it is only in the experience of it that you yourself are able to judge. It is your body that is your first indicator. Becoming aware of how things FEEL and trusting that instinct is a major step towards empowerment.⁣

This week I have been invited to a lot of meetings out, and I have battled with myself over whether to attend in person or not. After all digital meetings save time and energy.

The problem is that London is open again and it seems churlish to decline both personal and professional invitations.

Nevertheless I have decided to build a brave new hybrid of pre and post Covid habits. Now that the canvas is blank, I’m going to try new things out.

How rare it is to have this chance to break old habits and create new ways. And if locking myself in a phone box all day makes me exponentially more efficient, then lock myself in a phone box I shall!🧚🏻‍♀️

We are in an unprecedented position right now in the UK. With a blank canvas of potential in front of us for building new ways of doing things. As the world slowly opens more demands will be made on our time and physical energy. This is your opportunity to decide what you can and cannot do, and your opportunity to shape your environment. You don’t have to do what you’ve always done... 🤍🌱

The Taoists like to say “seven times down, eight times up,” no matter how often things decline, an upswing, happy days will always follow.

It’s not exactly a “positive” way of looking at the world in the western sense, where we are generally taught a successful life is on a constant and continuous [and unachievable] upward trajectory.

I personally take a lot of strength from this concept/observation. Which of course is also indicative of quite how unevolved I am, because I wouldn’t be bothered by either the good or the bad if I were...

How many times have you dabbled in a relationship and got your fingers burnt? Enough times that you are now wary of yourself and your ability to make choices? Are you wary of an entire gender?? Have your poor burnt fingers made you shutter your heart?

Breaking those barriers down is no joke. It is deep psychological and emotional and soul work to convince yourself to dip your fingers in the water with an open heart, an open mind and an open soul...
.. if you’re reading this then you’re doing it, and it may not feel like it’s working, but I promise you: it is.

Keep. On. Working.

Looking at the past through brutal lenses is such an easy thing to do. Cruelty, abandonment and rejection can easily become the touchstones of a life.

In my experience, therapy is essential foundational work for development and individuation. A way to release painful memories in a safe space. Until such a time as the therapy itself becomes an oppressor.

When this happens it’s time to explore new paradigms.

For me, when therapy started
to feel static rather than dynamic I knew intuitively that the time for action rather than reflection had come.

Time to clean those lenses and get a new game plan.

When I compare last lockdown with this one, I can see the difference between my connection to nature then and now. Spending my days sitting in the garden, in the sun, while the trees bloomed and the birds sang the hardest I’ve ever heard them. I felt so completely connected to the earth. There were times when I felt no differentiation between my body and the body of the earth. I could sense her, how she breathed and shifted and sensed me too. And I have missed her. Through the winter I have walked out in bare feet on frozen grass for as long as I could bear it. But I couldn’t feel her because my body was so tight from the cold and I was trying too hard. When we try too hard the thing slips away from us like water through our fingers. Let it go and it will come.

Approaching life in the way of the Bhakti yogi: that everything is a divine teaching is an absolutely transformational way of seeing the world. All your actions are acts of devotion, and life is a therapeutic process. Every challenge is an opportunity for personal growth and individuation, for elevation. Wow. Then you find the joy and pleasure in even the most boring or painful things.
