Wigan Athletic Ladies & Girls are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Wigan Ladies player Sharon (Fieldhouse) Alva, who passed away in the early hours of Monday morning following a short stay at Wigan Hospice.
Sharon was part of a hugely important generation of female footballers who helped pave the way for the women’s game during the 1980s, at a time when women’s football received very little recognition, support or media coverage.
Fondly known as “The Tank” for her tough, no-nonsense defending, Sharon was a tremendous servant to Wigan Ladies and spent her entire playing career with the club.
Between 1985 and 2004, Sharon made an incredible 352 appearances, scoring 9 league goals and receiving 35 Player of the Match awards — a remarkable record and a testament to the commitment, toughness and loyalty she showed to the club.
Players such as Sharon form an important part of the history and foundations of women’s football in Wigan, and her contribution to the club will always be remembered.
Everyone at Wigan Athletic Ladies & Girls would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Sharon’s family, former teammates, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rest in peace, Sharon. 💙🤍
Forever part of our club’s history.
