The audience were fidgeting, looking around, for help.

The speaker hadn’t noticed.

I watched this happen recently, and it was uncomfortable.

The presentation carried on, and on, and people got more and more agitated.

The clues…

People were shifting in their seats. Looking down. Glancing around. Fidgeting. Flicking through the agenda asking “what am I missing out on by enduring this…?”

Audiences sense it between each other, and good speakers can see / feel it too.

I was reminded of this when recently re-reading John Maxwell’s The 16 Undeniable Laws of Communication. He calls it “The Law of the Thermostat.” (Image is from the book).

A good communicator doesn’t avoid the mood of the room. They do something about it. “Is anyone else warm…?” they might ask.

Speed up. Slow down. Ask a question. Drop the next three slides. Tell a story. Get people involved. Change your voice. Take an unexpected pause. Adjust the environment.

Do something. Because your audience can feel helpless.

Audiences are communicating with you all the time. Not with words, but with their eyes, posture, movement and energy.

One of the presentation skills you develop through experience isn’t the 🗣️ speaking, it’s awareness.

The next time you speak, watch the room. And have the confidence to serve, and respond to your senses tell you.

Have you felt helpless as an audience member, faced with boredom?

The feedback speaks for itself…

Wondering if you should proceed with a workshop to improve your communication skills?

It would be easy to fill your feed with all kinds of claims, and promises.

The most authentic assurance is the feedback that others share.

This one from the Chief Executive of a charity who need to raise vital funds was heart-warming to receive.

Have a good week. What’s on your agenda?

Nims Purja, taken too soon.

For this week's Friday Ripple, it's his words that continue to inspire many, and put a spotlight on Sherpas, Nepal, and Climate.

I carved out some time yesterday to listen back to a few podcast conversations Nims Purja had. Look up the High Performance podcast if you are interested, and search "Nims".

His story is full of many examples of hope, resilience, determination and mantra of "Anything is Possible".

Enough said.

The record started months ago.

Before the cameras.
Before the crowd.
Before the finish line.

Josh Kerr publicly declared he was going after the mile world record. He named the project. He chose the event. Then he told the world.

And then in the shadows, whilst we all waited, he did the work.

It got me thinking...

We all have goals, but do we really commit to them? And do we keep them private? Safe. Hidden.

Why? Is it because if nobody knows, nobody sees you fail?

But when it's just you, nobody holds you accountable either.

Maybe that's the lesson.

You want to speak more, or lead more.

Don't just write your goal down.
Name it.
Date it.
Say it out loud.

So here's my question...

What goal have you been keeping to yourself because you're afraid of saying it out loud? Is now the time?
