CELTMAN RACE RECAP // SWIM ๐โโ๏ธ
1:55am alarm, roll out of bed, caffeine, bowel movement, rice bowl with almond butter, pack the van, head to Sheildaig for a 4am pick up & 5am swim start.
Arrived at T1 with 30 mins until the bus left for the swim start. Far from ideal. Racked Maverick at 192... had a quick glance at the competition steads. No time to check tyres, second bowel movement.
Slipped into the ZONE3 swim suit and before I knew it they were calling for the competitors to load the bus and go.
Nervous small talk on route. Tree line opens, there it is, the famous burning Celtman Extreme Scottish Triathlon symbol that I've seen in soo many photos and dreamed of seeing with my own eyes. Drums getting louder.
Treading carefully into the loch, the reflection of sunrise on the others goggles, small chuckle of disbelief. The ash of the burning Celtman logo floating by my face feeling like Phoenix rising from the ashes, my whole world turning to slow motion. Caffeine gels kicking in... heart is racing with the beat of the battle drums and pipes.
Skulling the water focusing on my line, listening for the countdown... 8, 7, 6, this is it Jonny... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....
BANG!!!
Washing machine effect. Kicked and slapped my way through the wall of jellies somehow I had made it to the chase pack 1.5k in and feeling fine. I found good feet and stuck to them like glue. I can hear shouting. A kayak marshal warning us we were veering off to far to the left. Wheres the island I have to swim round... get to it and hug the shore. Water not as cold as I was expecting. The group started to break a little and so I found some clear water to lay the hammer for the last K. Sighting all the way to the slip I could see the fire, hear the drums and kept the sight of pink support t-shirts infront of me. '8th out the water Jonny, you f@!k'n smashed that swim bro' , 'Go Jonnyyyyy'. The support crew were telling me everything I wanted to hear. Exited the hard way. Relax... breathe... bring that heart rate down.
This is a good start...
192, where's my bike.
I'M RACING!
