If seeing a woman breastfeed her baby makes you uncomfortable, embarrassed, awkward or anything less than grateful for the incredible thing women’s bodies can do… that’s yours to sit with. 🤍
I was told I couldn’t feed Isaiah during Covid, in freezing November weather, because there were no seats inside.
I was told I could feed my baby in the toilet.
All I needed was a sheltered place to feed my hungry baby. And that was my first real experience of adversity as a breastfeeding mother.
I’ve had friends and family turn their heads when I fed him. I’ve been handed a muslin to cover up. I tried it once — he overheated, we couldn’t make eye contact and he hated it. So that was a no from us.
I’ve even had people sexualise something that was, quite simply, me feeding my child.
And I had people tell me it was time to stop after just a few months, despite Isaiah refusing a bottle.
But that wasn’t about what was best for him or me. It was about their comfort.
I’m so incredibly grateful that I was able to breastfeed Isaiah for 18 months.
Was it exhausting? Absolutely.
Were there times I wished I didn’t have to? Of course.
But it was also one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced.
Something that only he and I could share.
So when I see a mother feeding her baby, I don’t see something that needs to be hidden, covered or apologised for.
I see a mother meeting her baby’s needs.
And I feel grateful that women can do that.
I’ll do it all over again with our next baby. 💕
