Drawing competition winners and exhibition!

Last night, the judges met and discussed all the amazing entries to our drawing competition. You sure made it difficult for them! You’ve sent us so many creative, interesting, scary and funny monsters, the judges struggled to pick. The 6-10 age group had so many entries, we decided to split it in two and have two winners from this segment.

The five winners are:

In the 0–5 age group: Arlie, 5, who wins a lovely seagull plushie made of recycled plastic bottles. This plushie was donated by C & J’s Little Shop Of Allsorts
In the 6–10 age group: Jay, 8, who wins an awesome silver Pokémon plushie donated by G3 Toy Shop - Weston Super Mare
In the 6–10 age group: Olivia, 7, who wins an awesome silver Pokémon plushie donated by G3 Toys
In the 11–15 age group: Millie, 11, who wins a gift card from The Hippy Shop
In the 16+ age group: Ade, “over 16”, who wins a super wine glass and bottle holder donated by Against The Grain

Congratulations!!

(Better images of the winning entries and their prizes will be posted once the exhibition is closed.)

The Monster Exhibition is now open in The Stable Games Room. We really wish we could have displayed all the entries, but we severely underestimated how many wonderful artists we have in Weston! A little more than half of the entries are on display, and it sure is a wild mixture of super-imaginative monsters. Pop in and take a look next time you’re in town!

In addition to our five winning contributions, you will see the art of:

Emina Melissa, 4
Leo, 5
Rose, 5
Tabitah, 7
Phoebe, 10
Marcus, 6
Frances, 8
Gemma, 36
Matilda, 5
Finley, 5
Izzy, 8
Bethany, 8
Freya, 9

The exhibition will be accessible during The Stable Games Room’s normal opening hours until Tuesday 6th December. When the exhibit is over, we will put up pictures of ALL the entries on this page, so you won’t miss a single one! We will also draw (randomly) a couple of extra prizes among all the participants, and announce them here in the middle of December.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated, to The Stable Games Room for lending us the exhibition space, and to the shops that donated prizes to our winners.

We will be in touch with all the participants with more information.

EXTENDED DEADLINE!!

Phew... what a month! Amelia had to pop to Norway to help her 92-year-old-gran move, and it became more of an ordeal than expected. On her way back to the UK, she picked up a monster lurgy and was ill for two weeks too!

As lovely and caring as the monsters are, they aren't very good at social media. Without a reminder post or any further messages - we think it would be only fair to give those of you who forgot about the deadline a little extension!

Get all your monster drawings in by the end of this week (4th November) to be in the competition!

We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Those of you who've already handed in your drawings: we're so impressed with your skill and creativity! We can't wait to display them once the extended competition deadline is over!

1. The competition will run from 20th September until 20th October 2022. (NOVEMBER 4th!)

2. The competition is open to everyone local to Weston-super-Mare* and we will award prizes in four age groups: 0-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16+.

3. Your artwork can be A4 or smaller in size.

4. You can draw or paint the monster in any medium you want. We’ll accept collages, felt creations, installations and clay creations, but the final submission must be a flat (two-dimensional) image. In other words, if you make a monster out of clay, place it in a fun setting and submit a photo. The photo in its entirety will count as your artwork.

5. Your monster can be scary, cute, funny, strange, or anything else you’d like, but it has to be your own creation, and it shouldn’t feature (too much) blood/gore (this will be a family-friendly exhibition).

6. One submission per person.

7. Each submission should have the contestant’s name, age, phone number and email address written clearly on the back in pencil (so it doesn’t show through the paper). For contestants 18 or under, please use the phone number and email address of a parent or guardian. Please make sure no identifying information is visible on the front of the artwork.

8. Please place the submission in an A4 envelope (or one big enough to hold your artwork without needing to fold it) and mark it clearly “Weston Monster Hunt”. Hand it in to reception at The Stable Weston in Wadham Street within regular opening hours, no later than NOVEMBER 4th Alternatively, send it by mail to:

Weston Monster Hunt
The Stable
3-6 Wadham Street
Weston-super-Mare
BS23 1JY

Multiple submissions from the same household/friend group/school/nursery can be placed in the same envelope.

Mail submissions must be post stamped no later than NOVEMBER 4th

9. The artwork will be judged anonymously. From each age group, we will choose one main prize winner.

10. A number of other winners will randomly be drawn from all submissions. At their discretion, the judges may choose to award additional prizes.

11. Submissions may be featured on our social media pages.

12. At the end of the competition, we will exhibit as many of the artworks as possible at The Stable Games Room in the week leading up to Halloween. The artworks will be marked with name and age of the contestants, and the age category winners will be marked as such.

13. We will not be able to return any submission by mail, but they can be picked up in person from The Stable Weston after the exhibition week.

* You do not have to live inside the boundaries of Weston-super-Mare to participate, but we will not be mailing out any prizes or returning any submissions by mail. In the event of a win, you need to live near enough to pick up your prize yourself or arrange for someone else to pick it up for you.

Disclaimer: This competition is run by Ameliabilities/Thought Library Media Ltd with generous donations of prizes and exhibition space from participating stores from Weston Monster Hunt. The judges’ decisions will be final. In the event of no submissions in an age group, the judges may choose additional winners in another age group.

Looking for something fun to do with the family now that the monster hunt is over? Why not pop by Sanctuary Cafe WSM for a games night?

This friendly bar and café opened in April, and has quickly established itself as a beloved community space. With excellent coffee and homemade cakes, it’s a perfect place for a little treat. And with a wonderful food menu with loads of tasty gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, everyone is guaranteed to find something they’ll enjoy on your night out.

Their board game collection ranges from quick and simple games for one, to vast, epic games that will require several evenings for a whole group to finish. But regardless of your group size, the ages involved or their experience levels – you are sure to find the perfect game to play.

First and foremost, Sanctuary is a friendly space where everyone can feel welcome. With social board game nights and events arranged by local groups, there is often an inclusive bunch of people to join. Or why not take the opportunity to make up your own friends and family challenge? Can you try 5 new games in October?
How about 12 before Christmas?

Board games can be an excellent way to learn problem solving, collaboration, negotiation, maths, dexterity and other functional skills. It’s also a good way to spend time together without screens or other distractions.

If your friend group is looking for something new, why not take your game night to the next level by trying some of Sanctuary’s RPG-themed cocktails? And with a fully vegan drinks menu and some excellent alcohol-free options, no one will feel left out.

The monster who hid in Sanctuary misses Ken and Nneka dearly, so make sure to say hi from us when you stop by!

The monster hiding in Imaginarium - Weston is a self-proclaimed fuddy-duddy, but since taking up residence on this wall, they simply can’t stop talking about comics!

Imaginarium is a shop close to our hearts. For 10 years, they’ve supplied Weston with the very best selection of comics, sci-fi and fantasy books, and collectors’ items.

Going through their bookshelves is a treat for any fan of science-fiction or fantasy literature. You’ll find all the great classics and loads of newer gems you may not have heard of. Most of them are pre-loved but in great condition, so you can find a real bargain on your next favourite book.

Their comic selection is fantastic. Whether you’re into the big superhero names or more niche stuff, you’re sure to find something you’ll like. And if you’re in the mood for something new? Just ask! The staff really know their stuff, and they’ll always try their best to find you what you’re after.

When you’re there, look through their amazing collection of T-shirts. Full of pop-culture references and your favourite characters, there’s something here for everyone, and some good chuckles too.

If LEGO is more your thing, this is the place to go. With boxes full of heads, legs and torsos (still LEGO, don’t worry), you can easily build the minifig of your dreams. They also have a selection of sets to choose from, and loads of fun gifts and collectors’ items.

Whether you’re looking for your next read, a present or a new hobby, pop by Imaginarium and look around. Weston is lucky to have this little shop. You’ll find it on Orchard Street!

Have you stepped through the doors of Rose & Amber lately? If you have, you understand why the monster hiding in there is the happiest one!

For more than 15 years, Rose & Amber has supplied Weston with crystals, incense, clothing, wonderful service and good advice.

They have the widest selection of crystals in the South West, and they really know their stuff. Whatever you need, they will listen, consider and recommend based on their many years of experience and passion for the subject. And the advice they offer is a mixture of holistic and geological information – one of their largest suppliers is a geologist, and they always make sure to understand the origins of the stones and crystals in their selection.

Whether you’re after raw crystals for your rock collection or polished ones for your spiritual practices, Rose & Amber pride themselves on either having what you’re after, or being able to get it for you. “We carry the raw, the rare and the rest.”

Could your wardrobe need a little freshening? This might be one of the largest clothing stores in Weston by number of items! Shirts, skirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, bags and accessories – they carry them all in many different styles, materials and colours.

The atmosphere is always calm and happy, and you’re not only met by a warm smile from the staff, but also the friendly twinkle of thousands of gems.

If you’re looking for a gift for a special someone, you’ll find something in here – gorgeous jewellery, stunning amethyst cathedrals, beautiful salt lamps, comfortable clothing, incense, oracle cards, or perhaps a new oil burner. Swing by Rose & Amber the next time you’re in town, and learn for yourself why they’re such a popular shop.

The monsters all love the planet, and you can imagine how thrilled they were to hear that one of them would be hiding in Weston's own zero waste and refill store!

Good & Proper Zero has a huge selection of common dry goods like beans, pulses, flour, spices, cereals and grains. You can buy just what you need – to avoid food waste – and use your own container, reducing the use of plastic and extra packaging.

But dry goods is only part of their offering. Why not swap to refillable hand soap, dishwashing liquid, multi-purpose cleaner or laundry detergent? The liquids wall has everything you need to keep your home squeaky clean, while staying healthy and planet-friendly.

If you've been wanting to get started with "reduce, reuse, recycle" - you'll find brilliant – and adorable – solutions here. Why not swap your plastic wrap for reusable beeswax wraps? Or start using a shampoo bar to avoid plastic shampoo bottles? Bamboo toothbrush? Sustainably produced gifts? You'll find it all here, and then some.

Or perhaps you're more in the mood for a break and a snack? Treat yourself to a gorgeous cup of coffee and delicious cinnamon bun, or one of their other sweet or savoury treats. If you want to bring something home, there's vegan pic'n'mix on the shelf, and you can't go wrong with a bar of Tony Chocolonely – chocolate from a company that's actively improving the conditions of cocoa farmers around the world!

A shop like Good and Proper Zero is a treat for any town, so stop by next time you're in town, say hi to our monster, and figure out which of your plastic-clad habits you can swap for a zero-waste one.
