Cains Cross Ladies RFC 5 Westbury Ladies RFC 17

Westbury were all fired up for this game, and from the whistle Cains knew they were in for a hard game. The first 5 minutes were full of fast flowing rugby with the visitors having most of the possession, the referee had little to do as there were no handling errors in the first 6 minutes. Cains defended valiantly but the constant pressure from Westbury resulted in a try from second row forward Laura ( two tone ) Wilson sadly Bates missed the conversion. Cains stepped up the pressure and came back hard against the visitors, poor tackling and lack of concentration allowed a breakaway try for the home side on the 15 minute mark, again unconverted. The rest of the first half was a battle, with both sides attacking and defending well, 5 all half time. Westbury came out in the second half determined not to let this game slip away, as they had done in their previous encounter with Stothard & Pitt. Westbury dominated all of the play, and through sheer determination were rewarded with a try when second row come scrum half Claire Bates was thrown over the line by her team mate no 8 Nikki Smee , Bates converted her own try. Westbury continued to pile on the pressure and with 10 minutes left to play outside centre Lana Plummer broke through to score an electrifying try, sadly unconverted. The home side never gave up, but Westbury were not going to let Cains score. Westbury Ladies first win, with lots more to come. A great game of rugby to watch with both side putting in 100 % effort.

Match report Sunday 27 November
Stothert and Pitt V Westbury ladies RFC
Stothert and Pitt 17 Westbury 12

The visitors started of strongly and dominated the game for the first 10 minutes, and were rewarded by a try after 13 minutes with Bates barging over the line to score her first try for Westbury. An expertly placed conversion by Bates added another 2 points. Against the run of play the home team due to a lapse in defence by Westbury scored a breakaway try on 20 minute mark unconverted. Both teams increased the pressure and intensity of the game, however no further score 5-7 half time. The home side came out in the second half fighting, Westbury were put on the defence. Although Westbury fought hard in the rucks and the mauls, there ball retention was poor. As a result of this and some poor tackling the home side scored on the 41 minute mark this time it was converted. Westbury fought back and went thorough several phases to get into the opponents 22, from the back of the scrum Westbury no8 Smee powered over for her first try ever, sadly unconverted. The home side went on the attack again, and on the 57 minute mark scored another try unconverted. A great ebb and flow game to watch, with endeavour put in by both teams.
