❤️🖤 PRE-SEASON COMPLETE | A GREAT DAY FOR THE THROSTLES

A fantastic day of action for our Throstles squad as, for the first time, the new-look group came together in full, and what a day it was.

Long, intense and extremely enjoyable. There were some brilliant moments throughout, with new relationships beginning to form and plenty of encouraging signs as we continue to build towards the new season.

Across the five fixtures, the team put together an impressive run of four successive clean sheets, two of which resulted in victories. That run also included a hard-fought 0–0 draw against eventual tournament champions Villa Rockets, who won every other game they played, before our day concluded with a tough test against hosts Aspire.

There were also special moments for two of our summer additions, with Johann George and Naglis Montvilas both finding the net on their first outing in Albion colours. ⚽️👏

Plenty learned. Plenty of minutes in the tank for everyone. Most importantly, plenty to be excited about.

Now the work continues with just two weeks until the National League campaign begins. 💪

We can’t wait to get started. ❤️🖤

❤️🖤 OUR CAPTAINS | 2026/27

Ahead of tomorrow’s first fixtures for our newly formed Throstles group, we’re delighted to confirm our leadership team for the 2026/27 season.

While this squad has been deliberately built around a group full of leaders, experience and strong characters, an internal vote amongst the players has confirmed the two who will officially lead the team this season.

Player-coach Brad Bates will wear the captain’s armband, supported by Abbie Bolt, who moves into the vice-captain role having led the Throstles as player-coach throughout last season.

Two experienced leaders who know each other and the group incredibly well, but most importantly, part of a squad where everyone has a role to play in leading us forward.

Our WBA Throstles squad is complete for 2026/27, and we can’t wait to get started.

This Sunday, the team heads to Kettering for our first competitive action of pre-season as we take part in Aspire’s Madeleine Steel Invitational.

Five games across the day will provide us with a fantastic variety of opposition, valuable court time for the group and the perfect opportunity to begin putting our work into practice ahead of the WFA Premiership campaign.

WELCOME TO THE THROSTLES | Naglis Montvilas 🇮🇪

We’re delighted to announce the signing of Republic of Ireland international Naglis Montvilas, who joins the WBA Throstles as our overseas recruit for 2026/27.

Naglis brings a wealth of experience, having competed at 2 World Cups, 2 European Championships, multiple Champions Cups and won numerous domestic honours in Ireland.

He’s also no stranger to English football, spending the past two seasons with Villa Lions, where he was regularly recognised as one of the division’s standout performers despite operating in an unfamiliar role.

During that time Naglis worked under Brad Bates & Abbie Bolt, while the trio have also shared the court on two separate occasions, both ending in tournament victories in Ireland and Scotland.

Naglis said:

“I’m really excited to be joining West Bromwich Albion Throstles. The team had a fantastic season last year, and I’m looking forward to being part of the next chapter and hopefully building on that success together.

“It’s exciting to see how we can develop and adapt to the style Brad wants to bring. Having previously worked with Brad as my coach at Villa Lions, it’ll be great to now share the pitch with him as a teammate and experience his ideas from a different perspective.”

Head Coach Brad Bates added:

“I’m thrilled with the signing of Naglis and he completes our squad really nicely.

“Overseas signings can bring challenges around training availability, but this felt pretty risk-free. I know Naglis extremely well and know exactly what he can bring.

“He’s incredibly talented, versatile and intelligent, but also desperate to keep learning and developing. He’s making a huge effort to join us as much as possible while putting in additional work behind the scenes.

“I’ve no doubt he’ll settle quickly and offer us plenty on court.”

WELCOME TO THE THROSTLES | Johann George

We’re delighted to announce the signing of Johann George, who joins the WBA Throstles from Norwich ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Johann is a player who has been on our radar for a little while, so we’re delighted that everything has aligned to make the move happen.

A key figure within the Norwich setup, Johann has performed consistently at Championship level, played his part in achieving promotion and gained valuable experience of Premiership football. We’re now looking forward to seeing him build on those experiences in a new environment at Albion.

Speaking about the move, Johann said:

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to make this move and join a new club for the first time. I’m excited for this new chapter, the challenges ahead, and the chance to meet new teammates and make new memories.

“I’ll give everything I have for the club and I can’t wait to get started!”

Head Coach Brad Bates added:

“I’m delighted to have Jo on board. He’s a great lad who already has plenty of Championship experience, performing at a high level and playing his part in achieving promotion to the Premiership.

“I know that Premiership campaign was a tough one, but the experience he gained from it will serve him well going forward.

“He’s an exciting young talent with plenty of raw ability and potential. I feel that with some guidance, regular opportunities and a new group around him, he can really kick on and show what he’s capable of.

“I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

WELCOME TO THE THROSTLES | Baris Inel

We’re delighted to announce that Baris Inel will join our WBA Throstles group for the 2026/27 season, making the move across from WBA PFC.

Baris has been part of the Albion family for many years and, despite spending a couple of seasons away from the club, it wasn’t long before he found his way back home.

He brings a wealth of Premiership experience into the group, having represented WBA PFC on numerous occasions and contributed to two league title-winning campaigns during his time with WBA PFC.

Baris is also no stranger to the Throstles. A previous spell with the team saw him play his part in an impressive WFA Cup run to the Semi-Final, and we’re delighted to now welcome him back into the group.

Known for his excellent game awareness, intelligence and team-first mentality, Baris is someone who contributes far beyond his minutes on court. We know exactly what he can offer this group and hope the move provides him with increased opportunities to make as much of an impact on the court as he consistently does off it.

WELCOME TO THE THROSTLES | Harry Bestwick

We’re delighted to announce that Harry Bestwick will join our WBA Throstles group for the 2026/27 season.

Harry is an incredibly talented young player with excellent game awareness, a keen eye for goal and plenty of quality to offer at Premiership level.

Having joined the Albion family ahead of last season, Harry stepped straight into the first-team environment and was tasked with learning and adapting to a completely new style of play, something that naturally takes time. His opportunities and minutes were also limited at times due to classification requirements, but when given the opportunity to express himself, his quality was clear to see. That was perhaps best demonstrated in the Regional League, where Harry finished the campaign as the league’s top goalscorer.

Now, as he moves into the Throstles group, we hope increased opportunities and regular minutes on court will provide Harry with the platform to showcase the very best of what he can do.

Head Coach Brad Bates said:

“I’m delighted to have Harry in the group. He’s an exceptional talent and an even better person.

“I had the pleasure of sharing the court with Harry last season and, while the campaign as a whole didn’t quite go as planned, it’s important to remember he came straight into our first team and had to learn a completely new style of play. That adaptation takes time, and there were never any question marks over his ability or potential.

“My aim this season is to give him a platform to excel. He comes into the group with a real eye for goal, excellent awareness, devastating power and great versatility. Those qualities give us plenty of options and should only increase the opportunities available to him.

“I’m really excited to work with him and see what he can achieve.”

A new opportunity. A huge amount of potential.
