We are looking forward to getting back to coaching our junior athletes after the summer break.
Here is a little about our philosophy from our coach Al Thorner.

‘Why this philosophy matters to me

As both a coach and a father, I’ve been lucky enough to see first-hand just how important those early years in athletics can be.

My own children began their journeys through Wells City Harriers. At the time, none of us could have known exactly where the sport might eventually take them. What mattered was that they were given the opportunity to run, jump, throw, learn, compete, make friends and most importantly, develop a belief in what they were capable of.

Years later, having watched them progress into elite sport, it has reinforced something I believe very strongly as a coach - we should never put a ceiling on a young athlete’s potential.

Not every child who comes through our junior group will want to become an elite athlete — and they don’t need to. Success can mean so many different things. It might be representing their school, joining their first cross-country team, improving a personal best, gaining confidence, or simply discovering a lifelong love of being active.

But equally, somewhere amongst the children turning up to training on a Monday evening will be a future national champion, international athlete or even an Olympian. We simply don’t know yet.

That’s why our job is to give every young athlete the foundations - strength, speed, endurance, balance and coordination, while creating an environment where ability isn’t predetermined and ambition isn’t limited.

As a parent, I know how powerful it is when somebody believes in your child.

As a coach, I want every child who comes through Wells City Harriers to feel that same belief.

Every child has potential. Our job is to help them discover how far it can take them.

— Al Thorner

Another fantastic turnout by the Harriers at the August Bank Holiday edition of The Baltonsborough 5 Mile Race today.

In (thankfully) cooler conditions than last year’s race, Victoria and Ellie came 2nd and 3rd female, while Tom was third male. Ray picked up the prize for 1st V50 male.

Great to see some fast times and course PBs across the board!

Thanks to fellow Harriers including Laurence Badman and our supporters for the photos.

Need some parkrun inspiration ahead of tomorrow?

🛫Aime and 335 other runners made it to the inaugural event at brand new parkrun Compton Abbas Airfield last weekend. There was a great feeling before the start and lots of excited runners!

🌳 Jonah and Heath were both at Woolavington Playing Field junior parkrun. Finishing in 1st and 2nd place respectively, they were just seconds outside of their PBs and well ahead of the rest of the runners.

🩰 Emma and Melissa used the official excuse of it being the 22nd August to wear a tutu at Shepton Mallet.

💨 Thea got a PB at Cheddar’s Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun.

🏙️ Graham and Cath were in London running alongside the Thames at Kingston parkrun.

💪 Poppy had a strong finish at Burnham and Highbridge parkrun.

☘️ Ray was at Stormont doing a shakeout run before finishing the Antrim Coast Half Marathon in 1.26.36 the following day.

Happy parkrun day! Harriers have been near and far in recent weeks enjoying a variety of parkruns…

🐻 David and son Toby ran Mamquam Spawning Trail Parkrun near Squamish, between Whistler and Vancouver. They saw their first sighting of a black bear pass in front of them 1km in. No picture of the bear unfortunately!

🇨🇦 Neil has also been in Canada at Chain of Lakes Parkrun in Halifax. An old trail route meant the course was 2.5k slightly down hill 2.5k back up. It was humid but nice and sunny.

🇵🇱 Natalie and Sean visited Krakow Parkrun. They swerved the usual touristing to nearby Zielony Jar Parkrun as they needed a K for their alphabet and not a Z surprisingly!

💥 Sophie set a new female course record of 17.49 at Llanfoist Crossing Parkrun.

⌚️ Junior Adam completed his second 5k parkrun at Shepton Mallet and achieved a huge PB of 25.42, over a minute off his first effort four months ago. Alfie did his first 5k parkrun in 24.57 with an awesome finish.

🥈Junior Heath finished in 19.10 at Longrun Meadow Parkrun and 20.11 at Midsomer Norton Town Park 5km run (not actually a Parkrun, but a free event the first Saturday of every month at 9am). Heath was 2nd overall and first junior on the mixed terrain hilly course. Go Heath!

🏖️ Aime tagged along with the Dawsons for a seaside away day at Minehead Parkrun. A nice flat course that passes by the start of the South West Coast path.

🌱 Nikki and Sean were matching in red at the Eden Project Parkrun.

⛪️ Kathy and Jon enjoyed Tewkesbury Parkrun on a beautiful summer’s morning.

🦀 Florence was at Bolberry Down Parkrun near Salcombe.

🚜 Graham, Cath and Poppy enjoyed local haunts Frogmary Green Farm and Burnham and Highbridge Parkruns.

Yesterday was the Haselbury Trail 10K, race 13 in the Somerset Series. There was another great turnout from the Harriers 🦢 with both Tom and Eleanor finishing third 🥉.

It was a slight change of scenery with no corn 🌽 in the field this year, however there was surprisingly some water in the ford, enough to get your feet wet! And yes, the hill was still there.

Inspired by the excitement of the Commonwealth Games, as well as Elise Thorner's outstanding silver medal 🥈 in the 3000m steeplechase and Ellen Barber's incredible personal best performances, the Harriers were back in action at the third Yeovil Open last Thursday.

Both Elise and Ellen have represented the club at the Bill Whistlecroft Arena over the years, making it especially inspiring to see so many of today's juniors (and seniors!) following in their footsteps on the same track.

Another great evening. Thanks Yeovil Olympiads AC
