Well, at 9.40am I wondered if we would even have a game. Standing on a goal line and not being able to see the 18yrd Box! But it cleared, and we went into the Nene Cup Round 2 full of hope after some recent strong performances. Today we welcomed Div 1 side Naseby, in a game that we knew would test us - and we did not let ourselves down!
10 minutes in, Naseby took the lead. Their physical presence at set pieces was clear to see and they took full advantage. Shortly after that, F***y mish*t a freekick into the far post (unfortunately I am joking, it was an absolutely rocket!). 1-1.
Mid-way through the second half, and a strong shot from Stu was spilled by the GK, and James leapt on the rebound to knock home - 2-1. Later in the half and a set piece of our own, Ryan with a long through, Dan S with a little flick before Logan taping home from close range. A strong half, and a 3-1 lead at the break.
Into the second half, and most of the pattern remained. We worked hard, knocked the ball around well, and had a solid defensive performance to minimise their threat as much as we could. Ollie decided to step up with more assists this half, putting one on a plate for Dan S to stroke home confidently from about 12 yards.
A few changes to personnel, but the boys that come on always bring the work and energy with them.
Another set piece for Naseby gave them a second, with a long throw not dealt with for once, and then knocked it home from close range. 4-2.
Time to soak some pressure, with our GK making a few good saves tipping a few over the bar, and coming for corners and throws to relieve the pressure from set pieces. 15 minutes to go, and Ollie S again the provider as he did all the work down the left, beating multiple players before getting the ball across for Alex to bag a goal from the bench. 5-2, and that is how it remained.
Thank you Naseby for a good game, and the complimentary remarks from the manager at full time. A well earned and deserved win for us today, and into the hat for Round 3!
