BEWL WATER RESERVOIR LEVEL UPDATE

With the hot and dry weather continuing, we have been keeping a close eye on the reservoir level at Bewl Water.

Here are the latest figures:

📅 20 July 2026: 72.3%
📅 27 July 2026: 69.5%
📅 3 August 2026: 66.8%
📅 10 August 2026: 64.3%

That is a fall of 8 percentage points in just three weeks.

Looking at the recent trend, the reservoir has been dropping by an average of around 2.67 percentage points each week.

If this current rate were to continue, a simple projection would put the reservoir at approximately:

➡️ 17 August: 61.6%
➡️ 24 August: 58.9%
➡️ 31 August: 56.3%
➡️ 7 September: 53.6%

Of course, these figures are only a projection. Rainfall, weather conditions and water usage can all have a major effect on the reservoir level, so the actual figures could be very different.

We will continue to keep everyone updated as we head through August and into September.

Today our Rangers responded to a fire near Bewl Water. Although it wasn't on Bewl Water land, we were on hand to assist and help keep the area safe.

With the current hot, dry weather, the risk of fire is extremely high. Our Rangers are always on fire watch during these conditions, keeping a close eye out for any signs of smoke or fire.

If you're visiting the area and notice any signs of a fire, please report it to Bewl Water immediately and, if there is an immediate danger, call 999.

We can all help protect this beautiful landscape by taking extra care: please don't light barbecues or campfires, dispose of ci******es responsibly, and never leave litter behind, especially glass, which can increase the risk of fire.

Now that the kids have broken up from school, why not bring them to Bewl Water for a fantastic day out fishing?

Children under 16 fish FREE with a paying adult on the boat, making it a great way to introduce them to fishing and enjoy some quality family time together.

The fishing has been great, with plenty of perch around and a few trout holding in the deeper water, so there's every chance of catching something!

Why not make a full day of it? Bewl Water has a children's playground, the Aqua Park, beautiful walks, and plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Don't worry if you're new to fishing—we have hire rods available, and our tackle shop is fully stocked with everything you'll need to get out on the water.

Today, the Brazilians took over Bewl Water for their annual competition, with over 100 anglers joining us for an incredible day on the water! 🎣🇧🇷

This event is always a highlight of our calendar, and it's fantastic to see so many anglers enjoying everything Bewl Water has to offer. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, as well as all the staff and volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

# What Do the Rangers Do During the Heatwave?

As fishing becomes slightly quieter during this heatwave, many people wonder what the rangers do. The number one priority is looking after the water and ensuring Bewl remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

With the warmer weather, more visitors come to Bewl, and unfortunately, some people break the rules. It is very important that the rangers carry out regular water patrols to make sure that nobody is swimming in the reservoir and that all watercraft on the water are authorised to be there.

We have also taken this opportunity to start our annual boat refurbishment programme earlier than usual. The team is busy repairing our fibreglass boats, replacing wooden components, and repainting seats. At the moment, we are refurbishing four boats each week.

As visitor numbers increase, so does the amount of litter around the site. The rangers are therefore busy litter-picking every evening to help keep Bewl looking its best. We would also like to thank the local residents who help us with this task. Your support makes a huge difference, and we are very grateful for your assistance.

Of course, we are also on fire watch. Last year, we helped deal with a large fire in a neighbouring field, so during these hot and dry conditions we remain vigilant and prepared to respond if needed.

Finally, thank you to the anglers who continue to fish despite the heat. One fisherman today enjoyed an excellent day's sport, catching 70 perch and two trout.

The continued hot, sunny weather has brought little change this week, with fishing remaining challenging—particularly for the fly anglers. There were still plenty of boats out over the weekend, and those fishing Any Method (AM) at anchor generally enjoyed the better sport, with bait once again proving the most productive approach.

July is traditionally one of the more difficult months on Bewl, as trout become less active in the warmer water temperatures. Similar conditions are being experienced across many of England's lowland stillwaters at the moment.

Despite the hot weather, it's been great to see so many anglers continuing to support Bewl Water. The boats have been busy, and while the trout are making us work a little harder, there is still plenty of sport to be had.

On Wednesday morning, Mike Harris and I headed out to explore the fly fishing. I managed to hook a trout on a floating line using deep-fished Superglue Buzzers, although it quickly came adrift. Mike enjoyed more consistent action, landing a "full house" of three perch on small B***y patterns fished deep. If nothing else, the perch were certainly willing to feed.

There was some early cloud cover, but it soon disappeared and wasn't enough to encourage much surface activity. Apart from a couple of "Polaris missile" trout launching vertically from the depths before dropping straight back down without moving their heads, the surface remained quiet.

We covered plenty of water, including the Main Bowl and Bewl Straight. It was noticeable how much clearer the water became as we moved around the reservoir, and although the conditions looked promising, there was very little sign of feeding trout.

Perch fishing, however, has been absolutely superb. Fish are being caught consistently around the 2-metre depth with Hook House playground, and **The Nose** all producing plenty of quality perch. Small spinners, maggots and flies are all proving successful, making for some excellent sport while the trout remain deeper in the water.

A good number of boats were out on Wednesday, well spread across the reservoir, with some anglers enjoying a spot of holiday coarse fishing.

Whether you're after flies, PowerBait, spinners, landing nets, tackle, or a few last-minute essentials, we've got everything you need for a successful day's fishing. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always happy to offer advice on what's working, where the fish are holding, and the best methods to try.

Bewl remains a wonderful place to spend a day afloat, with stunning scenery and plenty of opportunities beyond the trout. Perch and roach continue to provide enjoyable sport on maggots, small spinners, or flies. Over the years, a growing number of regular visitors have targeted perch throughout the summer, and they can provide excellent fishing, especially in the deeper water.

For the coming week, a slow, low, and often static presentation remains the best approach, whether you're fishing bait or fly. Keep experimenting with depth, as the trout could be holding anywhere between 5 and 30 feet

And that's the challenge... finding them!
