🎨 WHY I PERSONALLY DON’T USE FARROW & BALL PAINT

I sometimes get asked whether I use Farrow & Ball, and my answer is generally no.

That’s not about having a dig at the brand. It’s simply based on my experience as a professional decorator and what I expect from a paint when my name is attached to the finished job.

For me, coverage, consistency, application, durability and overall finish are incredibly important. I also have to consider the amount of labour involved. If a paint requires more work or additional coats to achieve the finish I’m happy with, that ultimately means more time on the job and potentially more cost for the client.

Farrow & Ball have some absolutely beautiful colours, and I completely understand why clients love them. But personally, I’d rather take that colour and have it colour-matched into a professional trade paint system that I know and trust.

I regularly work with products such as Dulux Trade because I know how they behave, I know the preparation required, and I have confidence in the finish I can achieve.

At the end of the day, you’re not just paying me to put paint on a wall — you’re paying for my experience and my judgement on what products will give you the best possible result.

So if you love a Farrow & Ball colour, absolutely choose it. I’d just personally recommend having that colour matched into a trade product I have confidence using.

Another long but productive day at JTR’S Painting & Decorating! 🎨💪

Today has been all about battling those stubborn fly spots! Just when you think you’ve killed them all off, a few more seem to reappear — but we’ll get there. Sometimes decorating is about patience as much as it is painting!

The ceiling is pretty much finished now, and we’ve been getting the first coats onto the walls. As always, you keep finding those little bits of minor prep along the way that need sorting before moving forward properly.

There’s still more to do on the walls and plenty of woodwork to work through, but good progress has been made today.

That’s me done for the day — time to head home, recharge the batteries and come back tomorrow ready to go again. 👍

Another hectic day for JTR’S Painting & Decorating! 🎨💪

I had Adam helping me today — a trusted fellow decorator — as we tackled a kitchen and dining room that definitely gave us plenty to get on with!

Today’s challenge was trying to kill off all these spots and stains that were showing through everywhere. It’s one of those jobs where you can’t just throw paint over the top and hope for the best — they need to be properly treated and killed off first, otherwise they’ll simply come back through your finish.

On top of that, we’ve been dealing with purple walls, ceilings and plenty of woodwork, so there’s certainly been no shortage of preparation and painting today!

A busy, challenging day, but that’s decorating for you. Sometimes the jobs that look straightforward are the ones that keep you working the hardest.

Today’s job was a perfect example of why it’s important to actually investigate a crack rather than simply rake it out, fill it and paint over it.

Unfortunately, the previous plaster repair here wasn’t particularly good. As you can see in the video, the crack was still physically shifting and moving when pressure was applied to the area.

If the surface is moving, you can rake that crack out and fill it as many times as you like — there’s a very good chance it’s simply going to crack again.

🔍 A little tip: If you notice a suspicious crack on a wall or ceiling, gently check the surrounding area for movement. It doesn't necessarily have to be bare plaster either — an existing painted ceiling can show the same problem.

If there’s movement, simply putting filler into the crack isn't addressing the underlying weakness.

In this case, the damaged area needed opening up and preparing properly, followed by mesh tape and a skim over the affected section to help reinforce and stabilise the repair before any painting takes place.

Of course, if there’s significant movement, damp, a continuing leak or you're unsure what's causing it, the underlying issue needs investigating first.

🎨 Today’s job — small job, but definitely not a quick one!

I’ve got two ceilings to sort today, and both have their own little challenges.

One has a pretty bad stain that needs properly treating before I can even think about finishing it.

The other is a bit more complicated. Unfortunately, a previous leak from some shower fitting work damaged the client’s ceiling. It had supposedly been repaired and plastered, but after having a proper look at it today, the plaster is actually moving when you gently press against it and you can physically see the crack opening and closing.

So rather than simply painting over it and hoping for the best, I’m going to repair it properly. That means removing anything loose, reinforcing the affected crack with mesh tape where required, skimming the area and getting it as solid and smooth as possible before decorating.

It’s one of those jobs that looks small on paper but can actually be quite fiddly, awkward and time-consuming.

Unfortunately, fresh plaster and repairs also need time to dry properly — you simply can’t rush it just to get the job finished in one day.

Hopefully I’ll have everything completed tomorrow or the following day, and most importantly, leave the client with a ceiling that looks right and has been repaired properly. 👍

It’s been a very trying week on this exterior job, but as always, the aim has been to get the job done properly rather than rush the finish.

Exterior decorating is all about the preparation. From scraping back loose and failing paint, carrying out repairs where needed and using products such as Zinsser Peel Stop, every stage matters if you want the finished job to actually last.

Then it’s about using the correct paint system and working with the client to achieve the colour and finish they’re looking for. 🎨

One thing this week has definitely reinforced is the importance of proper scaffolding. Yes, ladders have their place, but when you’re working at height for long periods, scaffolding gives you a much safer and more stable platform to work from — and your knees and feet certainly appreciate it too! 😂

It’s been a physically and mentally demanding week, and sometimes the best thing you can do when everything is getting on top of you is stop for ten minutes, sit down with a decent cup of tea ☕, switch off from the stress and then get back to it.

Another challenging week completed, another happy client, and another reminder of something I say all the time:

Running a busy business and working alongside trusted subcontractors means I can sometimes find myself in the middle, making sure everyone is on the same page. Occasionally wires can get crossed — we’re all human — but nothing is ever deliberate.

I’ll always do my best to communicate clearly, treat everyone fairly and make sure both my clients and the people working alongside JTR’S are looked after. At the end of the day, we’re all working towards the same thing: a great job and a happy client. 👍🎨

🏠 EXTERIOR JOB COMPLETE – WHAT A WEEK! 🎨

Finally managed to get this exterior job over the line today! 🙌

Both gable ends completed, cladding finished, windows done and the surrounding door frame all sorted. It’s certainly been quite a task this week, especially with the scaffolding delays earlier in the week, but we got there in the end.

Today in particular has been a tough one for me — mentally, emotionally and physically, I’m absolutely shattered.

Sometimes, when work is full-on and personal life is stressful behind the scenes, I think you’ve got to allow yourself ten minutes. For me today, that meant sitting in the van with a nice cup of tea, shutting everything else out for a few minutes, clearing my head and then getting back out there and carrying on.

You can’t always control what life throws at you, but sometimes those ten quiet minutes are enough to reset yourself and get through the rest of the day.

Most importantly, the client is really happy with the finished result, I’m happy with it, and after the week I’ve had, I’m definitely glad it’s the weekend! 😂

I hope everyone has a brilliant weekend.

And just a little reminder — be kind to each other. You never really know what somebody else is dealing with behind the scenes. A bit of patience, understanding and support can go a very long way.

If I’m Busy, I’ll Send in Louis! 🎨💪

As JTR’S Painting & Decorating continues to stay extremely busy, I can’t physically be on every job myself — and I’d rather be upfront about that than keep customers waiting unnecessarily.
That’s where Louis comes in.
Louis is someone I know, trust and have personally worked alongside. If my diary is completely booked, I’m more than happy to send Louis in to carry out the work under JTR’S Painting & Decorating, with me overseeing the job and making sure the same standards are maintained.
For me, it’s simple: I’m not going to send just anybody into a customer’s home. If they’re working under the JTR’S name, they need to be someone I trust to do the job properly.

So if I can’t do it… I’ll send in Louis! 😂🎨

🏠 Another productive day on the exterior!

The scaffold is finally up, which meant I could properly get stuck into the higher areas today.

It’s been a day of scraping, filling, painting… then more filling and painting! 😅 Just taking the time to get everything right and keep the finish consistent across the whole job.

Having scaffold makes such a difference on exterior work. Yes, you can do plenty from ladders, but when you’re working at height for long periods, there’s more pressure on your body, especially your legs, and you’re constantly thinking about your footing.

If you want the job done properly and safely, scaffolding is worth it. It gives you a stable working platform, better access and, most importantly, allows you to concentrate on the prep and finish rather than balancing on a ladder.
