Spot the difference ⁉️

Valgus knee collapse where the knee caves inwards during movements like running and jumping, is a common issue in young athletes, particularly in sports requiring sudden changes of direction βš½οΈπŸ€πŸŽΎπŸ‰πŸ‘

This improper alignment puts extra stress on the knee joint, increasing the risk of ACL tears, patellar injuries, and long term joint damage.

Key prevention strategies:

1. Get stronger around glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps βœ…

2. Neuromuscular training, including balance and proprioception exercises to help young athletes maintain knee control during dynamic movements βœ…

3. Proper technique: Coaches should emphasise proper landing, jumping and cutting techniques βœ…

4. Flexibility: stretching tight muscles around hips and ankles helps improve mobility and alignment βœ…

Take a look at what the parents are saying about our youth athletic development sessions.

It is really important to us at Edge that we create a training environment that is challenging and will push the young athletes but that this is achieved in a safe and enjoyable way.

Foot Strike 🦢 πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

During speed school we progressed our box jumps to reactive hurdle jumps.

This gave the youth athletes the opportunity to work on how they strike the floor before we went on the pitch. This is really important for high speed running.

We were looking for a strong mid foot strike to load the legs rather than being to high on toes and losing all of the energy you get back from the floor.

β€œWhat happens next”?! πŸ€”

Often we perform movements and exercises in isolation and don’t consider the outcome and context of what the next movement could be.

When coaching jumps we want to land in a position that allows us to repeat another jump or another athletic action….. a side step, a sprint, a tackle etc

So we coach not only the best landing position but also the mindset and intention to perform further movements.

It’s important to consider these movements, not only in isolation, but more how they link together in a series of meaningful interactions.

Applying Strength to Speed πŸ‹πŸ»πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

This single leg RDL to box is great for applying the strength we gain in compound exercises to more dynamic and running specific movements.

- Actively lift the back leg βœ…
- Step over the knee to A-Stance βœ…
- Drive down into the box βœ…
- Positive shin angle βœ…

We still have spaces for our next Speed School on Wednesday 21st August at Northampton School for Boys.

We will be covering Strength Training for speed development in our morning session and then working on high speed running and acceleration techniques in our afternoon session.

Sessions are specific to 16-18 year olds and for all sports.
