What type of ‘calorie gamer’ are you? Swipe ➡️ to play 👾🕹🎲

It’s awesome to have a good awareness of your energy intake, especially when it’s advantageous to pay attention to it in order to ensure you’re on track with your goals.

And we love getting people to a place where they have a diet based on inclusion, not exclusion, and have flexibility with not just food choices, but their mindset around for and eating.

The truth is… sometimes we can stretch that flexibility just a little too far and create other problems.

Or we go the other way, and take the numbers as absolute gospel, disregarding the dynamism of the human body (and accuracy of food labels / absorption of calories) and it kinda takes over a bit.

Just be mindful that if you’re trying super super hard to work that flexibility, that it doesn’t actually tip over into something completely inflexible that you’ll not be able to do for a sustained period of time, or worse still, puts you back at Level 1…

We can honestly say that between us, we’ve been all of these types of calorie ‘gamers’ over the years… of course we’re curious as to which you’ve identified with and any others you can think of ⬇️

"Ever been ghosted? 🥀

It's rough, right? Yet, today I'm suggesting you ghost someone...for good.

Sounds harsh? Let me explain.

This person is why you're unable to step into unshakeable confidence.

They derail your diet.

They cause you to second guess every decision.🚫

Who are they?

The perfectionist in your head.🧠

This voice whispers things like – "You can't track everything you eat."

"Your workout won't be good if you're tired."

"What if there's a better diet?"

They mean well, but their obsession with perfection holds you back.

Life isn't perfect. Sometimes you can't hit nutrition targets.

Sometimes workouts are 'meh'.

But if you ghost that perfectionist side of you... You take action anyway.

It's those imperfect actions that manifest into the person you aim to be.

At Strong Collective, we get it. We build perfect plans, but we also know you won’t stick to it 100% of the time.

Life happens.

And we're here to help you embrace those moments, to keep seeing progress week after week...💪

If you want to ghost your perfectionist side for good, click the link in our bio to chat with one of our coaches.

No pressure. No guilt. Just a chat.☕️

I was fortunate enough to be invited to Rotterdam last week to speak in front of 120 people at a conference on nutrition and exercise for health and wellbeing, whilst also addressing some key considerations for shift workers and frequent travellers.

And what struck me from some conversations is that we increasingly seem to be looking for hacks and quick fixes for our health. As technology advances, so does this expectation that can shortcut our way to better health markers or improved relationships with eating.

I’ve shared some of the key points I came back to in this talk, because I think everyone can and should be reminded of some of the super simple principles… and honestly these points are what ended up exciting people in the room the most.

I’d love to know what resonated with you most 👂

Illness, injury, holiday, honeymoon, work, family commitments… there are all manner of reasons why you might take a period of time away from the gym. And it’s all good!

But then you start to think about returning… and somehow it feels worse than starting in the first place 😱

Here’s one massively underrated tip we often work through with clients in this position (and ourselves 😆), it’s super simple, so give it a go.

There’s a metric tonne of other things to consider, and other things you can do or think about on your return - covered some absolutely corking tips in a reel which will be linked in stories 👊

“That’s just the way I am” is something we often hear on consultations with clients when unpacking their perfectionist tendencies.

But just like the changes they want to make to their health, fitness, body composition, relationship with food… here’s some of the work you’d more than likely benefit from doing too.

Not only to make the journey a successful one, but to help you retain those awesome results too 👊

26/09/2023

In our quest for a balanced diet, it's important to recognise that our bodies have certain needs. We require a variety of vitamins, minerals, fibre, essential fatty acids, and a baseline level of protein, which can vary depending on our individual goals.

Additionally, we need an adequate amount of energy from our diet to support our bodily functions and daily activities.

It's worth noting that there are very few single foods that can fulfil all these requirements simultaneously and therein lies the challenge.

The challenge of finding single foods that can fulfil all these needs simultaneously.

But is that even necessary?

Consider these food examples to understand the complexity of nutrition:

Spinach is renowned for its vitamin K, iron and fibre content, making it a nutritional gem.

However, attempting to rely solely on spinach for sustenance would be a challenging endeavour. Its calorie content is so low that you’d need to consume truckloads to avoid hunger and starvation.

Does this make spinach "bad" due to its low-calorie nature, or "good" because of its nutrient richness?

White rice, an easily digestible carbohydrate, provides a substantial amount of calories to fuel our daily activities and workouts. However, it contains less fibre than whole grain rice.

Does that make whole grain rice better? Even if our fibre needs are being met from elsewhere?

Similarly, someone shared a study with me that showed a breakfast of 2 eggs was better than oatmeal in raising choline levels.

Well, yeah cause eggs are high in choline and oatmeal isn’t. Just as oats are loaded with fibre and eggs are not.

See where I’m going with this?

In the real world, we need not dwell on these hypothetical food dilemmas. Why? Because we typically consume a variety of different foods.

We could have the eggs for choline AND the oatmeal for fibre.

We could also get these nutrients from something completely different.

The quality of our diet is determined by the collective contributions of all its components, rather than individual foods.

How many calories you burn when doing your strength training workouts in fairly meaningless if I’m being honest.

Why?

Well, for starters, your strength training sessions don’t really burn that many calories.

For most people it’ll be around the 150-300 calorie range.

That’s not much and if your goal is to just burn calories then cardio might be a better option.

Or you might just need to shift your focus and work on your relationship with food and exercise instead.

You might be wondering if we don’t strength train to burn calories then why do we strength train at all?

Well, because strength training has other really meaningful benefits that directly improve you’re quality of life.

Benefits such as:
+ Increase in strength
+ Increase in muscle mass
+ Improves cardiovascular health
+ Helps improve immune function
+ Reduces risk of diseases such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and heart disease
+ Reduces stress and anxiety
+ Improves cognitive function
+ Lowers risk of hypertension
+ Improves metabolic health
+ Improves insulin sensitivity
+ Improves bone mineral density
+ Improves sleep
+ Increase in self-esteem and confidence

And none of those benefits are linked to how many calories a workout burns!

05/09/2023

Before I get cancelled 😅…

I'm a strong advocate for employing boundaries.

They are essential for maintaining healthy relationships and preserving our wellbeing.

However, I'm observing a growing trend where people are labelling their overly rigid and / or uncompassionate behaviours as 'boundaries'... when it's really just a disguise for straight up d**khead behaviour.

Here are examples of how this situation can manifest itself and lead to unkind and unfair behaviour towards others ⏩️

At the end of the day, boundaries are only healthy and productive for you and others, if you employ them in a responsible way.

Here are two things I make sure I do whenever I'm putting boundaries in place:

1️⃣ Communicate them to those around me with clarity, context and compassion. This includes being willing to answer questions or re-explain when needed, rather than assuming people are aware, understand or agree with my perspectives.

2️⃣ Allow myself space and openness to flex them occasionally. Why? Because there will sometimes be occasions when we want / need to put someone else's needs or preferences before our own... and if we get so caught up in rigidity with our boundaries, we could end up causing harm to others and ourselves.

If you're struggling with someone in your life using their 'boundaries' as an excuse for hurtful behaviour, remember that most people probably aren't aware they are doing this and it's likely coming from a place of wanting to protect themselves vs. hurting you.

If it's negatively impacting you though, try asking them to re-explain their boundaries. Ask how you can support them to implement these... and let them know calmly how being on the receiving end of their actions and decisions can make you feel and why.

If you both have the conversation from a place of curiosity, you'll likely be able to find ways to compromise and flex on both sides, for the benefit of your relationship 😀

And if not?

There are plenty of other non-d**khead fish in the sea! 😉

I'm curious... do you have boundaries and how do you go about communicating them clearly and compassionately with those around you? ⤵️⤵️

Most of my clients come to me wanting my help to execute the perfect plan 🤓

But the beauty of coaching is realising that “perfect” doesn't exist.

The best plan is one that is created to suit YOU and help you unlock your own achievements, in your own time.

Things like:

🍛 Enjoying an Indian meal... and having a naan bread for the first time in years

💪 Getting back in the gym after a prolonged period of time off and realising you’re stronger than you expect

😎 Not just accepting, but embracing being different to others

👂🏻 Feeling listened to and heard when you are concerned

🏋🏻‍♀️ Having so much fun that even though your original goal is achieved, you want to carry on

These are the vibes that matter over here 💃🏻

Genuinely so grateful to get to work with such badass humans.

What would good vibes look like for you right now? ⤵️

People often assume that I eat vegetables because I like consuming them.

But that’s not really true.

Sure, I love myself some potatoes or peas but most of the veggies I eat is because I understand how important they are to our overall health.

Don't think that hitting adulthood automatically turns veggies into a five-star meal on your taste buds' menu. Nope! But hey, being all grown up means you've reached the ripe age of wisdom to understand that those greens are a non-negotiable.

There are times when we have to do things that we might not enjoy doing to get us closer to our goals and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I mean, most of us wake up early morning to go to work when we’d rather stay in bed but we still do it anyway.

Why? Because we’re adults and we understand the reasoning behind it.

Same case applies here.

Vegetables are high in fiber, rich in various vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that seem to have positive health effects.

People who eat more vegetables live longer and have lower rates of heart disease and cancer.

I’d say that’s a pretty big reason to start eating more vegetables.

You might think that how you speak about the food you eat has no bearing on your relationship with it. 🗣️

However innocent your language might seem at the time, repeated usage will not only potentially contribute negatively to your own relationship with food, but can leave a lasting impression on those around you. 😒

Here’s just a few examples, but I could probably write a book with the sheer volume I’ve heard over the years (and realistically, throughout my lifetime!)

The good news? Once we understand why we’re using these words, it’s so easily modifiable 😀 And the more we modify, the better we feel ☺️

I'll let you into a secret 👀

I'm just like a lot of my clients and followers.

I like things to be structured, methodical and "in order".

And when s**t hits the fan and I have less control over my training, nutrition, work, etc... it makes me uncomfortable 😬

But here's the thing:

Perfectionism is a personal standard, attitude, or philosophy that rejects anything less than perfect.

And perfect simply doesn't exist.

So when you waste time and energy chasing it, you lose huge progress that can come from switching your attitude to one where you strive for imperfect action each day.

Enter the Flexperiment 👩🏻‍🔬🧪

As a coach I spend lots of time supporting clients to recognise that it's counter-productive to obsess over missing a session or panic when they can't eat some protein with a meal.

So I've decided to further adapt my OWN approach to training and document this, to show it can be beneficial to:

☑️ Place less focus on training (while still valuing and prioritising it)
☑️ Be more fluid in your approach / structure
☑️ Become MORE optimal, by being LESS rigid

SWIPE to read about how it works and the benefits I'm experiencing so far ⏩️

I should also add that while this was my idea, I have a coach to support me and hold me accountable to apply the 5 Principles I’ve laid out.

I'll even admit I text last week when my mum was in hospital and my grand plans to train around her care became impossible.

Why?

Because perfectionsim isn't something you just switch off overnight - especially during emotionally challenging times.

It's taken me years to get to a vastly better place with this and it’s a life long journey📈

This is also why I help others with this.

Not because I've fully nailed it, but because I truly get it and understand through challenging myself and others repeatedly: NOTHING BAD HAPPENS when you pause long enough to gain a broader perspective.

In fact, you’ll end up having far more fun AND making the same or even MORE progress 💥

If this resonates with you please share it to help others 🙏

And if you want to share your own story or ask me any questions, just drop me a private message! 📧

And that’s not all!

There are plenty of other reasons to get your daily step count up as well, such as:

1. Improved blood glucose control
2. Reduced insulin levels
3. Reduced postpandrial triglyceride levels
4. Reduced systolic blood pressure
5. Enchanted cognition
6. Improved mood
7. Enchanted fat loss when combined with a calorie deficit

Basically, the more you move, the better your quality of life now and later on as well.

And you don’t even have to aim for an arbitrary number like 10,000, just try to increase steps based on what you currently get.

That’s it.

So, let’s get moving?

Venturing into the weights area at 55 years old 👀

Owning her space 🏋🏻‍♀️

Proving to herself that nobody else is watching or judging 🤷🏻‍♀️

My client K is an absolute badass.

She came to me three months ago after seeing the progress her friend (another badass 🙌) was making.

She told me she was dipping in and out of classes at her gym, with no structure or motivation.

She said she’d like to build strength at this pivotal time in her life as a female, but “not knowing what to do, how much weight or how many reps” was stopping her from venturing into the weights area at the gym.

She also told me she needed help with nutrition. Her desk job had her moving less and snacking more… and she wanted to fit into her clothes comfortably again.

Fast forward three months and the progress is insane. She’s getting stronger every week, her clothes are looser and she now feels in control of her health.

And the best bit?

It’s not cost K anywhere near as much as she thought:

💥 She trains three times a week for about 45 minutes, with a structured plan to follow so she can walk in the gym confidently

💥 She still enjoys her favourite snacks and tipples, but now had the tools to manage this so it doesn’t derail her goals

💥 She moves more, but we’ve found ways to incorporate this in her day gradually instead of setting an unrealistic step target

K is proof not only that getting results doesn’t have to be complicated, but that it is NEVER too late to unlock your inner badass and own your space in the gym 🔥

If you’re inspired by this incredible woman and want to discover how you don’t need to tick as many boxes as perfectly as you think to achieve results, send me a message with BADASS and I’ll happily have a quick chat 💬

Probably one of the quickest ‘shifts’ we see with most of our clients when they start out, and as our coaching journey continues, is that acknowledgment of how unbelievable the human body is.

There are a million and one other absolutely awesome benefits to lifting weights (you won’t have to go far back on our feed to find them, or drop your thoughts in the comments below!) but this, for me, is one of the quickest and most powerful shifts and one I’ll never tire of hearing both new and our longer term lifters vocalise in catch ups and updates.

Gym membership? £39

Supplements that do nothing to help you lose weight and build muscle? £197.

Support from handsome(Dan made me write this), talented and incredibly humble coaches?

Priceless.

At least that’s what our clients think 😆

A lot of people we work with are already comfortable with what to do in the gym.

They understand how to set up their diet.

And they know exactly how to lose weight, build muscle and become more athletic.

Yet they still work with us at the Strong Collective.

Why?

Because they know how important regular feedback is.

Whether that’s keeping them accountable to their goal…
Stopping them from spiralling just because they didn’t lose weight one week…

Or helping them stick to their diet when a week of stress has them itching for Uber Eats.

So instead of committing to a plan for 2 weeks, only to throw any progress out the window at the first hurdle…

They make progress for 6 months, 12 months or even 24 months.

They shift the 30lbs of fat that had been clinging on to them since having kids.

They heal their toxic relationship with food…

And enjoy fancy dinners and wine with their mates without feeling an ounce of guilt.

They also become stronger than they ever thought was possible.

Typically this is where we remind you how our coaches can provide that support.

But that’s not the most useful advice.

So we won’t do that.

Instead, we’ll invite you to consider whether anybody you know can be that support person.

They don’t need to be a coach or nutritionist like us.

Sure, that gives you an edge, as you’ll always get the best guidance.

But as long as your person is supportive, objective, and not afraid to give you a firm kick up the arse every now and then…

There’s no reason they can’t help you be more consistent with your goal.

As you head into the week, think about if you have that person.

And perhaps ask for their help to keep you accountable.

But if you don’t?

Or you'd feel more comfortable outsourcing that role to a pro…

You know where we are ♥️

🙋🏻‍♀️ Hands up if you’ve ever thrown away a family-sized bag of sweets just to “get it out of the house”?

Firstly - if you have, I don’t want you to feel bad about that 😊 I’ve been there too, and I totally get why you thought it was a good idea…

However, removing trigger foods from your house is not the best solution 😬 It may seem logical to avoid temptation, but the Abstinence Violation Effect actually shows that this approach can backfire and lead to overconsumption🚫🍫

What if I told you that instead of eliminating these foods, you’d be better off eating some of them EVERY day? 👀

Watch me to understand how to apply this and remember - if you want to break the cycle, the priority should always be to foster a life long relationship with food 💞

Big love, Big Em x

You know by now… we’re not going to bulls**t you with some 6 week transformation 🙅🏻‍♀️

We work on radical, long term change with our clients… which is why most of them work with us for at least 6 months.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t want you to know how quickly you can see and feel changes if you JUST. START.

Swipe for quotes from clients just two weeks after starting coaching 😲

TWO measly weeks.

The power of taking action in line with your values and goals…

With someone to lay out the plan and support you when things don’t always go to plan straight away.

This is hugely underestimated.

We’d go as far to say if you are thinking about starting but cheating yourself out of doing it because of self-limiting beliefs, after one chat with us you’ll be ready 👀

A free chat, btw.

So what do you think?

Ready for a piece of what these legends have all unlocked and gone on to build and build and BUILD on?

Drop us a message and tell us your favourite food 😀

We’ll reply and tell you ours 🍕

Two dress sizes down…

With no crazy restriction 👗 ❌

Just a combination of the basics:

🔸 Calorie deficit

🔸 Increased protein

🔸 Daily movement

🔸 Training x3 per week

🔸 Ongoing support to navigate the inevitable challenges that crop up

Yup.

Sorry it’s not sexy 😂

But you know what it IS?

Sustainable.

Hannah has dropped two dress sizes and lost over 15cm from her waist, all while continuing to enjoy holidays and special occasions 🥂🍰

And you wanna know the plot twist?

She’s achieved all this progress with her fat loss goal WITHOUT the scale ever moving 😲

Imagine if she’d given up after a couple of weeks?

Or got frustrated and dropped calories unnecessarily, leaving her hungry AF and unable to continue?

This is the simplest story we can tell to explain the power of having a coach in your corner to bring an objective perspective and help you achieve your goals in the EASIEST way possible.

Because that’s how it should be at the end of the day…

If a coach or PT is making you slash calories every week or train silly amounts until you collapse, they are not someone you should be entrusting with your health 🥲

If you want to drop some dress sizes and build muscle with ease like Hannah, drop us a message and we’ll explain how we can help 🤗

Home truth incoming...

The scales are more trouble than they're worth sometimes ⚖️

Seriously - so many factors influence what we weigh each day and while research shows that hopping on the scale daily and using averages is a great way to understand that fluctuations are normal, it's also not an accurate marker of progress when taken in isolation.

Take client Hannah, for example. She weighs herself daily and her scale weight hasn't changed in 7 months... but she's lost 14cm from her waist and is the strongest she's ever been! 👀

Then there's Coach (me 🙋🏻‍♀️😆)... currently dieting WITHOUT using the scales because she knows they always stall in a fat loss phase and cause an unnecessary distraction.

Swipe to see how you can apply this yourself and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Have you ever got too caught up in what the scale says? 👀

We’re dating 👀

Ok, well strictly speaking I’m not…

But my client P is!

And you could say I’m living vicariously 😆

I’m revelling in the updates on how it’s going…

Partly because I’m deeply invested in all my clients.

Understanding what is going on in their personal lives is enables me to best set up and adjust their training and nutrition, to ensure they can keep moving forwards with their goals ⏩

But mainly because of the HUGE progress these revelations show about how far P has come on her journey:

😌 Prioritising pleasure and human connection over rigidity around food and training

🍺 Introducing new (and old) foods that she had been telling herself she “shouldn’t have”, thus increasing variety and enjoyment

👙 Wearing a bikini in public for the first time (having only cracked my challenge last year) without worrying what people are thinking

🥧 Embracing unplanned gestures of kindness without worry (note: if someone buys you pecan pie to take home after a date, they’re definitely a keeper 🙌)

💃🏻 Overall empowerment and freedom of choice… which doesn’t detract from her goals at all - and in fact, supports performance (hello strength increases 📈💪)

If you can’t tell by now, I’m absolutely BUZZING over this! 🐝

P has been working with me for 7 months now…

And it’s no coincidence that she’s getting a huge return on her investment into the process.

She’s done what many don’t, you see:

Given herself enough time to understand and embrace the process, try new things and build her own education and confidence 💥

I’m honoured we’ve built a relationship where she trusts me enough to share these important moments with me…

And on that note, I’ll be grabbing my popcorn for her next check in and keeping you posted 🍿😁

If you want to understand how our coaching can support you in living your best life and enhance the relationships that matter to you, drop us a love note in the DMs 💌
