This is Peter who is 94 years old. He has recently completed a falls prevention course with me. He has increased his endurance, improved his strength and balance. He has had no falls within the 6 months of the course. He lives independently and wants to continue to do so. His motto is ‘Keep moving and never give up’.

A review from Jen who attended a 6 month falls prevention course with me:

'I really enjoyed (is that really the right word ?!) my 6 month Falls Prevention Course. I didn't expect to get so much out of it, but it's life changing. I have a genetic condition which makes exercise very hard now i'm old; I'm also a serious asthmatic.

I learnt to stop rushing every time I stand up; something I'd never understood until James told us why.

It wasn't easy for me as if I'm doing something I like to do it completely and in the beginning that wasnt possible, but James was always advising those of us like me how to do some exercises in a different way.

At the end of the course I felt soooooo much better, I never thought it would make such a difference to my life but it has. One major thing is that I've been able to stop one of my many asthma meds (a night time specific inhaler only given to serious asthmatics or COPD sufferers). I am well able to deal with my asthma having had it most of my life, but this has been a life changer too. I miss my weekly exercise class though and really hoping I can do it again soon.'

A mindful hike: my client Nigel suffers from cerebral palsy in one leg and has frequent falls. After a year of training we approached 90 minutes of walking up the Lickey Hills.

To make it safe we focused on a few concepts:

• Optimum gait: walking heel-to-toe to walk safely and to prevent a forward fall.

• Optimum posture: keeping an aligned posture for greater stability on his feet.

• Mindfulness: walking slowly, being aware of each step and pausing to reset any loss of control and balance.

• Breathing: breathing from the belly to improve oxygen exchange, increase mental stability and reduce stress.

Working with a client who is recovering from a stroke. He has made gradual improvements of getting his speech back and his walking. He is now up to 2 miles on the bike and slowly getting his quality of life back.
