FAB Walks and Fitness I am a trained Lowland Leader and Hill & Moorland leader and founder of FAB Walks and Adventures. Located in West Cross, overlooking the sea.

I lead group walks around Gower and the Brecon Beacons, I run FLexercise classes in Mumbles and Sketty and Nordic Walking sessions in Clyne and Swansea Beach Fitness and Beauty

FAB Company aims to help women achieve optimum health and wellbeing, by promoting healthy living and complementary therapies, to benefit both mind and body. Nordic Walking, Reflexology, Rejuvenating Facials, Indian Head Massage and Healthy Nutrition.

This new research offers another strong reason to consider Nordic Walking as we grow older.

In a 12-week study comparing Nordic Walking with traditional walking, participants aged 65 to 80 completed three supervised sessions each week.

Both groups improved, but the Nordic Walking group recorded greater improvements in:

• Upper and lower body strength
• Aerobic capacity
• Confidence around falling
• Fear of movement
• Quality of life

The Nordic Walking group also increased its six-minute walking distance by around 51 metres more than the traditional walking group.

The study was small, with 28 participants completing the programme, so further research is needed. However, the findings support what Nordic Walking instructors see every day. With the correct technique, Nordic Walking actively involves the upper body and offers far more than a walk with poles.

I have noticed when we are out on our walks that most people love to chat during a walk. When you are part of a walking group, you make new friends, so it’s a great way to catch up. The walk can also be educational, looking at the different flora and fauna, as well as learning about the history of the area, places of interest etc. Then you have the spectacular views which we try and include in every walk, those WOW ‘must take a photograph’ moments.

But it’s also important to be mindful on a walk. Take in your surroundings, live in the moment, take a couple of moments walking quietly.

Being mindful - what does that mean?

Mindfulness works by taking your focus to the present moment and away from other thoughts. Listen to the sounds around you, take in the smells, feel your surroundings and yes even hug a tree. Having a mindful moment has so many benefits both physical and mental. Try it on your next walk. 🥰 — at FAB Walks and Fitness.
