Not all personal trainers are the same — especially in this situation

Most trainers are qualified to help with general fitness.

But if someone has:

• reduced mobility
• balance difficulties
• a long-term condition
• or is older and needing more support
…it’s important to look for someone with additional training and experience.

This might include:

• Exercise referral qualifications
• Training in long-term conditions
• Experience working with older adults

It’s not about finding the “best” trainer —
it’s about finding the right one for that person.

This is something we hear a lot from families.
When someone is getting older, or living with a long-term condition, staying active is important — but it also needs to be safe and appropriate.

The challenge is… not all personal trainers are trained to support this.

And it’s not always obvious what to look for.

With Parkinson's UK South West – I just got recognized as one of their top fans!

Thank you to Parkinson’s UK for a great event. It was really nice to meet some new faces and spend time learning from others working in this space.

It was also great to see one of RMR Rehabilitation’s trainers, who has completed Adaptive Fitness Training’s Parkinson’s course, delivering two of the workshop exercise sessions. It was a great example of how exercise can be used in a practical way to support people living with Parkinson’s.

Thanks again to Parkinson’s UK for organising such a positive event.

Great post from Parkinson’s UK South West highlighting the importance of physical activity for people living with Parkinson’s.
Exercise can play a powerful role in supporting movement, confidence, and overall wellbeing. When guided appropriately, targeted exercise can also help support neuroplasticity and functional movement.
At RMR Rehabilitation we regularly work with individuals living with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, supporting safe and structured exercise as part of a wider multidisciplinary approach.
If you or someone you support is living with Parkinson’s, exploring appropriate physical activity can be an important step in managing symptoms and maintaining independence.

Physical activity has a positive impact both physically and mentally. It can be as important as getting the right dose of medication.

Being active is important for everyone. It can make you feel good inside and out. It can maintain your health. It can lift your mood. And if you have Parkinson’s, it can help manage your symptoms. The more physically active you are, the easier it is to live well with Parkinson’s.

We are fortunate in the South West to work with some amazing physical activity providers as well our local groups, many of which offer regular physical activity alongside their support group meetings.
