Do you feel like you’ve been on a diet for years? I hear this so often from the ladies I coach, and food guilt and food anxiety is so common!
In my teens and twenties I suffered from eating disorders, so this topic resonates with me too.
I started coaching a lady a few weeks ago, and in our first session she said how stressed she felt about her diet, and the pressure to avoid certain foods. When I asked what foods she was worried about one of the first things she said was “avocado”. Avocado? What’s wrong with eating avocados? A well known food myth is that avocados are ‘fattening’… Yes, they contain fat, but it’s HEALTHY fat! 🥑
She also revealed she was using fry light, another diet culture invention, versus olive oil. When I checked her fat intake it was too low! It’s great when you can say to someone “you should eat more fat” 😄
Recent studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet, rich in healthy fats and avocados etc, performed better than low fat diets, with participants losing MORE body fat! You see, it’s not always about calories and fat, but about the nutritional quality of your food. Plus, women NEED good fats in their diets for optimum hormone function.
Demonising, and creating the notion of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods needs to change. Food is food, but in varying nutritional value. I eat a healthy diet, with around 30-35% fat (not that I officially record this daily, as life is too short), but I eat ‘treats’ daily, stuff my face with avocados, and liberally pour the olive oil, and I’m fine!
Two weeks on, my client has been eating all the things she’s missed, including regular avocados, cooking with olive oil, and has lost 5lb!
I received a voicenote from her saying “I’m enjoying food again!” This makes me SO happy. You’ll also be interested to hear that when I analysed her food diary (which contained all of the previously ‘forbidden’ foods), her nutrition score was AMAZING!
Are you trapped in the diet cycle? Tell me in the comments your food anxieties and I’ll try and put your minds at rest. 😊
