Owls Match Report
Owls v Bates Cottages CC
6th of September
Having won the toss, the Owls skipper elected to bat, and this quickly seemed to be the correct decision.
The openers got things moving nicely. Roy Haygarth was unlucky to miss out on a deserved half-century, and was caught for 49. Phil Jenkinson wasn't particularly interested in singles, with his runs coming predominantly from boundaries as he found the gaps with impressive regularity. He had a magnificent innings retiring on a very tidy 51.
Then came Sam Bewley, who decided singles were simply not his thing. His explosive 50 came almost entirely in boundaries, as he took the bowling apart before retiring with the scoreboard looking considerably healthier. Sam also produced the shot of the innings, launching a huge six into the pavilion and narrowly missing Gary.
Darren Willis and Riley Taylor then guided the innings towards its conclusion, although Darren was caught with just one ball remaining. This meant Wes had to hurriedly get his pads back on and face the final delivery, picking up two runs to take the Owls to an excellent 194β2.
With a big total to defend, the Owlsβ bowlers got straight to work. Gary Hall and Wes struck early, and from there, the wickets kept coming at regular intervals.
Wes picked up four wickets, finishing with an excellent 4β30, while Garyβs tight spell earned him 2β13. Riley Taylor picked up 2β17, with Roy Haygarth and Sam Bewley also chipping in with a wicket each.
There were plenty of good catches taken in the field too, including two excellent catches from Paul Duckworth, who normally keeps wicket but was let loose in the outfield for the day.
A few catches escaped us, but thankfully the bowlers kept putting them back in the right place.
Bates Cottages were eventually bowled out for 154, leaving the Owls celebrating a well-earned 40-run victory.
A strong team performance all round: plenty of runs, wickets shared around, some cracking catches and plenty of laughs. An all-round great game of cricket, played in great spirit.
