9 out of 10 (workers) are burning out, but talking about it at work still feels impossible.

Can it really be true that 91% of working people surveyed said they
had faced high or extreme stress over the past year, balancing work, childcare, and household responsibilities. Sadly the answer is yes!

And how many of those are working mums? Feeling the shame they they 'can't do it all' actually! Feeling 'less than' and comparing themselves to those (they think) that have it all together.

The Burnout Report 2026 reveals a silent crisis, because over one in three (35%) still feel uncomfortable discussing stress with their manager (a rise from last year). Support is often lacking: 27% received no help after taking time off for extreme stress, and only 17% had a formal return-to-work plan.

For working mums, returning to work often offers little relief, and it's rare to find companies who do this well (if at all). So let's drop the shame and find a solution.

Organisations must create safe spaces for conversation, provide tailored support, and implement structured return-to-work plans—because burnout isn’t just likely, it’s inevitable if nothing changes.

But there is another way, you can do something about it yourself! Because I've found a way to keep it at bay (not meant to rhyme - but catchy?) so that after being in burnout twice, I won't let it in a third time.

Have you ever experienced burnout? And if the answer is yes, do you really know what to do to ensure it doesn't come back?

Guess who's job is emptying the dishwasher??

🔥 🐎 As today marks Chinese New Year and the start of the Fire Horse era, I'd been reading about what things we could do and what not do, for good luck.

What it actually recommends is the following;

❌ 🧹 Don't - sweep anything, or do any washing, including your hair (or cut it -that brings misfortune to uncle's in the family apparently).

Washing or sweeping is seen or removing good fortune. Taking out rubbish - also not good - luckily bin day for us is Thursday, so we're safe to do it tomorrow.

☕ No breakfast porridge, as that's the breakfast of paupers. Thank god coffee was still ok!

Also, don't wash clothes (see above) and don't wear black or white, whilst red is a lucky colour. I don't really do full on red now, but I have got some nice new pink and red trainers, so outfit is pending.

🗣️ One thing I did like though, was 'No use of unlucky or negative words'. This is mainly relating to death or sickness, but I do prefer positivity generally and not being a negative Nelly. Because our words really do matter.

More on positivity another day - but for now, will you be adhering to any of this Chinese wisdom?

🐼 And if you were still wondering, yes, it's my daughter's job to empty the dishwasher, and I will have words! Nice try though on her part. Also she is 17 but still 'Jess Bear' - and she does love a panda, so it's all good, no child labour here.

I'm the BurnOut Protection Officer and fully support anything that can make our day brighter, positive and joyful.

And, I'm about to launch a 6-week, group program for working mums who feel on the brink of burnout, and want to find a way back. It that sounds like something you'd like to know more about, comment or DM me On the brink.

I remember a time I found it so hard to say one word....
...that word was so small but felt enormous.

😱 That word was NO!

I felt so many things when I said no.

> What will people think of me?
> They'll think I can't cope!
> Will my kids stop loving me?
> I'm a terrible person....
.. the list went on. And on.

😩 So I tried to say no in the nicest possible way, but 9 times out of 10, the no came out as YES!

I kept up the act of 'I can cope with all this'.

🤹♀️ But really I couldn't, it was just too many balls!

And, long story very short - eventually I burnt out.

💥 But then I found a way to to stop being the 'Yes mum'.

And if you want to know what I did, just DM me TALK and let's get you from Yes to No - in no time!

I'm Sarah, The BurnOut Protection Officer, busy mum, ok with saying no - in the nicest possible way.

What’s the Difference Between Stress and Burnout?

They might seem similar, but they’re actually quite different.

😪 Stress usually happens when you’ve got too much on your plate — you're tired from too many tasks, too many deadlines, too many expectations. You might think, “If I can just push a little harder, I’ll get through this.”

Burnout feels totally different though. It’s what happens when that stress doesn’t let up for a long time. We’re talking months here. You start to feel like nothing you do is enough.

And actually - ‘Pushing a bit harder’ is the worst thing you can do.

⛽ ❎ You’re already drained, detached, or even numb. And, it sneaks up on you slowly until one day, you realise you’re running on empty.

If life feels like a never-ending list of things you ‘have to get done’ and the joy has been sucked of you, it’s time to make a change.

But, I’m not talking more to do lists, more organisation, journalling or meditation, (you’ve probably tried those already) it’s about taking stock of what really matters in life.

🤹‍♀️ It’s about working out which balls you need to keep juggling (imagine they're made of glass) - the important ones, and which balls are rubber and can bounce away (for the time being).

I’ve been burnt out twice, and there won’t be a third time, because I’ve learnt what needs to happen to keep the glass balls in the air and not lose my $hit along the way!
Want to know my method to avoid (juggling) madness? Comment BALLS and I’ll send you the info.

This week is stress awareness week. So let’s be clear on the difference between stress and burnout.

Current view. Near Aberystwyth, Wales.

A tiny cottage for 2.

With my daughter not my husband - because;

1. I need to get away and find some head space.

2. Husband has broken his ankle and I’ve been looking after him (and his every need) for 3 weeks now.

3. It’s nice to spend time just with my 17yo daughter.

4. I don’t want to burnout!

5. I deserve it.

6. A change of scenery (every so often) is a must for my mental health.

PS. Husband was deposited with his parents in Shropshire, en route to Wales.

PPS. Would you do this?

So it’s sunny and you’re outside but you need your reading glasses too - what way round do you wear where yours?

Ps. Not naked but have a strapless top on 😆

PPs. Hair a mess as son turned off the water instead of putting back on timer 🤦🏽‍♀️
