Most of my jump lessons start like this.

Poles on the floor or little logs.

We practise the three main essentials for successful jumping.

Control of line, speed, and position.

When these basics are secure we can explore the height of a fence.

Good flatwork gives us great jumping.

After the Dressage Test

When you work with me you are not just paying me for the 45 minute session that I might provide!

The riders that work with me get full back up at all time and know they can message me or ask for a call if they need it between lessons.

I always ask my clients to send me a screen shot of their dressage tests which I keep in a spreadsheet for them - this allows us to recognise quickly any patterns or habits that might be occurring. This will help us to plan training as we compare across all the tests. Analysing our results is a very important part of our process and creates reflection.

I know this might be something you might already do too but with my coaching hat firmly on it can be quite enlightening. An example might be to see how we consistently might be scoring 7s on a final halt or that on a canter we are consistently getting one rein with a higher mark than the other. This type of date becomes very valuable as feedback for me and the rider.

The Warm up - to the Arena

My job when I attend an event with a client is to keep the worry away from the rider. As we will have prepared everything in advance all they need to do is ride.

So I am the time keeper, I first check everything is running to time and there are no unexpected gaps etc. I also note which rider is going just before the rider I am mentoring so we can time to the minute the last checks and getting down to the arena promptly.

Its important to note that you do not have to move your time forward if the rider in front of you is a no show but I would always be willing to move forward as it really helps the running of a competition. Extra note - you are not at liberty to run late.

In the heat I make sure you have got water and your horse has fly spray if needed. Back at the lorry we have water waiting for the horse.

In my career I have worked as a groom for Event riders and Show jumpers so I have lots of experience at being at shows and taking the pressure off the rider. I have also competed a lot myself so understand the individual needs.

The lovely Karen and Reggie.

Top marks for progress today in so many ways.

A trot that is just amazing!
A canter that had gone missing for a while has returned and is foot perfect.
An attitude that is so open to learning and thats for Reggie too.xx

Thank you Karen for your complete dedication and love for your horse. You both also make me laugh which is a great bonus in training

Rewind, Delete and Replay!!

Think of an old fashioned tape recorder where we had these three functions.

This can be useful in your own training when something might go slightly wrong. First pause and take a breath. Rewind what happened. Could you do it another way, what was the mistake, why might that have happened.

Go forward with your solution in your head and delete what happened before.

There was a great example of this in an interview with Ros Canter. She said that in the warm up before her dressage test her flying changes started to go wrong! She calmly came back to walk, thought about how she normally rides them, and then went on to ride them. Simple, calm and measured.

In jumping you might have had an awkward jump.
Again, come back to walk, rewind. Was it your line, speed or position? It will be one or maybe all of those!! Work out which one. Move on and jump the fence.

You have 45 seconds - what do you do?

Once the bell has been rung for you to start your test - you have 45 seconds to get down that centre line.

The training is done - its now your time.

Many riders panic a little about this 45 seconds but this is a great time just to set yourself up with a few calm deep breaths. Focus your attention and get into your performance bubble!!

You will have plenty of time to trot up to the A letter - normally judges will beep the horn after you have gone past the judges box, if they are at C. Mainly not to spook you but this gives you more than enough time.

Settle into a good trot if you are entering in working trot, allow enough space for a good turn onto the centre line. Smile and remember this is what you have worked to do. Remember that first impression does count so make it balanced and straight.

If you need some competition practice please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Review - Reflect - Repeat

I am so blessed that the riders I work with are very clear on doing this with me. We take time in sessions to review what is going well and what we might need to change. As the coach its my time to listen to what the rider is feeling and we can compare notes.

Being able to communicate how you feel to your coach is such a helpful tool. I love the way we work together to find the best solutions in training. Coaching is not a one way thing and I enjoy understanding more from the riders perspective.

These reflective sessions have sometimes been the turning point that was so needed to redirect the training or to confirm what we are doing is still right for everyone.
