I just wanted to share a lovely review I recently received from the manager of a care service regarding a lovely lady I’ve recently started supporting.
As the manager of a small private care service, I recently engaged Eddie Sutton to work with a vulnerable adult who receives 24-hour care. This is a lady with moderate learning disabilities and mild physical difficulties due to a curve in her spine and one leg that is slightly shorter than the other. The supported person is called Nova, she is aged 49, menopausal, historically her weight has fluctuated and she has struggled to engage in physical exercise. As a team we were aware that it would take someone with a unique set of skills to engage Nova in any physical exercise, particularly in the long-term. Like many of her peers in the LD Community, Nova had spent many years under the care of services that did not prioritise physical activity or achievementand therefor she had got accustomed to spending too much time in aimless, repetitive activity or simply sitting on the sofa watching television. Nova’s Guardian is her sister, a few years ago she took control of her Nova’s care plan and finances. As Guardian she is very invested in giving her sister the best possible opportunities to maintain her mobility, health and wellbeing. As Nova approaches the menopause and all the changes that face us as we age, her Guardian has prioritised diet and exercise.
Eddie Sutton is an experienced Personal Trainer with a BSc (Hons) Sports Studies (2:1 level). In addition to hisskills and knowledge in the delivery of personalised training programmes he is also a skilled carer with years of experience working with adults with learning difficulties and additional needs. When the decision was made to engage a personal trainer to work with Nova the main concern was long-term engagement. On first securing Eddie’s services we were immediately struck by his positive approach and encouragement, recognising even the smallest of achievement and coaxing Nova when she is struggling to persist and persevere. He has been very accommodating when it comes to supporting the team and introducing incentives to recognise and support Nova’s achievements. Eddie has shown a good understanding of the needs and vulnerabilities within the LD Community and the empowerment that achievement can bring. In just six-weeks staff have reported a noticeable increase in Nova’s balance and flexibility which is having a positive impact on her mobility and willingness to go for long walks. There are so many benefits to Nova continuing with a long-term person centred 1:1 personal training routine that not only supports Nova’s health and mobility but also her sense of pride, achievement and empowerment.
