Following on from my video on spinning for thin-lipped grey mullet, I thought that I would share with you a short video on how to make a quick change mullet spinner for yourself. All of the materials – with the exception of a tail rubber and your own choice of beads - are available from Spintec - https://www.spintec.co.uk/ - and, with a few basic tools, can quickly be assembled into a neat, really effective little spinner. Just add a 4 inch trace baited with ragworm and you are good to go! (If you want to go one step further for the best trace possible, just watch the original video to see how they are easily made with a bimini twist.)

All the best and I hope you have a lovely day!

Just a very short video today, looking at my 'extended' up and over leger, which I have found to be very good for both casting and fishing for a variety of species generally. It is also easy to put together since you don't need to make anything yourself - everything is available either in tackle shops or on eBay.

With a long established history, leger tackle is very effective and can be adapted to distance casting quite easily, which gave rise to the original ‘up and over' leger. However, while I have always liked the rig, I have, over the years, been a bit disappointed in how many times it tangled. Consequently, I set out to make it a little more efficient while also keeping it nice and simple. This is the result, an ‘Extended’ Up and Over Leger which is streamlined, very resistant to tangles and able to be easily made up from bought bits and pieces. Hopefully it will spark a few ideas and prove to be useful. I hope you enjoy watching it and, if you would like to leave it a like or a comment, perhaps share it or even subscribe to my channel, that would be very much appreciated.

All the best and I hope you have a lovely day!

New Video: Spinning for Thin-Lipped Grey Mullet

Link: https://youtu.be/78vmcZMsfyE (Goes live at midnight, 31st May, 2026)

I don’t often go after mullet. I used to, when I was younger, but for the last few years I just haven’t got round to it. So, when my young friend Rafa was hankering after having a go at catching some thin-lipped grey mullet, I thought ‘well, why not?’ Consequently, I made a few spoons – using materials that I purchased from a website called Spintec – and, in the process, decided to address some of the problems that I had faced in the past, where the mullet spinner tangled up far more than I liked. This time however, with a few tweaks to improve its performance, the spinner worked perfectly, especially when I paired it up with some extra short traces tied using the bimini twist. (If you think that it is a complicated super knot, it isn’t. Super, yes, complicated? No, Not with the handy little tool that is always in my tackle box!) Next stop: Stoke Gabriel!

All the best and I hope you have a lovely day!

I have always loved using light tackle so the chance to have a playday on the Skerries, using an ultralight rod and reel, which a lady angler christened the ‘Barbie Rod’, to catch plaice, was just too good a chance to turn down. I also wanted to try a slight twist on the way I normally fish the predator rig, which can be really good for plaice. (I have caught more plaice on it than with any other tackle.) It turned out to be a difficult day, which was saved by the use of a number of tips that I have picked up over the years. In this video, I will tell you the story of the day but I will also share those same tips with you in the hope that they may come in useful to you too.

Sometimes, hard conditions make for difficult fishing. The other day, following a week of Easterly winds, the water was a bit murky and the situation made worse by a very poor neap tide, which is often the kiss of death for decent fishing. I was in two minds as to whether or not to bother but, in the end, I decided to have a go on the bight rig, which will often pull a few fish out of the hat when other methods fail. This little video tells the story of how I got on while, in addition, I have put in detailed instructions on how to make the rig, as well as a diagram of a homemade fish cradle that I put together to keep the fish safe before they are returned. For those who, like me, are keen on conservation, it is a simple but effective way to prevent them getting injured. It doesn’t take long to make but it is useful.

It is also the first video for which I have composed all three pieces of music. I hope you like them although, I have to say, I do feel nervous about putting them into the public arena.

New Video: Perfect for Plaice
Link: https://youtu.be/z_LVy8miCig

I have always found the predator rig to be really good for plaice, especially in combination with my quick change boom. In point of fact, I have caught more plaice on it than any other tackle. Over the last few years, however, the telephone wire that I use for the stops has become harder to source and more difficult to work with. (Either that or I am, as I get older, not as strong as I was!) Anyway, I had a think about it and then set out to find an alternative way of making the rig, deciding to try it out on the Skerries, which are near Dartmouth in Devon, when I next had the chance. This video shows how I got on and, in addition, I have put in detailed instructions on not only how to make the rig but also how to fish it as well.

New Video!

Over the years, I have watched a lot of newcomers to sea fishing – and quite a few others – struggle with casting. I have helped quite a few – those that would like a bit of assistance – but learning how to cast efficiently is a basic skill which newcomers to sea angling need to learn if they are going to have any real chance of succeeding. The overhead cast, often scorned because it can’t compete with a pendulum cast, is actually a really good tool and one that I use most of the time. It is capable of putting baits well over 100 yards from the shore and is easy to learn. Nor does it take long to refine. In this video, I will show anyone interested how to do it properly and help you to turn this basic cast into an efficient tool to help you catch a few more fish.

In the Winter, I like to use maggot flies to target smaller carp on a one weight fly rod. It can be great fun and, sometimes, will catch a few surprises like perch, roach, rudd and the occasional larger, double figure carp. (I have put the instructions on how to tie the fly at the start of the video, where you can pause it if you are interested.)

Changing the subject, I hope that the background music is alright. I have been teaching myself to compose but this is only my third attempt. My apologies if you don’t like it but I just thought that it would be cool to do a video, even a short, where I do everything myself. Don’t worry though. I won’t inflict it on you often! I just wanted to knock it off my bucket list!

I hope you have a lovely day and I wish you all the best!

A long time ago, when I first started boat fishing, I used all sorts of rigs but gradually, over time, simplified everything down to a single quick change boom and a small variety of traces. This is now my go to tackle and, following requests from other anglers, demonstrate in this video how the boom is made. It is very simple, very efficient and enables you to organise your boat fishing to cope with most of the demands that you will ever meet in the UK, from bass fishing to smoothhounds to flying collar over wrecks and even the predator rig after rays and larger plaice.

The video goes public at 9.00 am this morning, 27th February, 2026. The link to it is https://youtu.be/_9CybKUiw30

I always like shorts when they tell you something new so I have been thinking about projects that might be of interest to anglers such as myself. One thing that I have been doing recently is using a lot of tackles with the T-Boom, an idea that I introduced in one of my articles for Sea Angler magazine. This is how to make one, very cheaply and easily. I hope that you find the video useful.
