The Complete Fit Midlife Pillars

Over the years I have often started the week by asking:

What do you need more of this week - and what do you need less of?

It sounds like a simple question, but how often do you actually stop long enough to answer it?

There is always something that needs doing. Someone who needs us. Something that gets pushed to tomorrow or further down the list. Our plates can become so full that there doesn't seem to be much room left for our own portion.

And that is exactly why I created the Complete Fit Midlife Pillars.

ME
MOVEMENT
NOURISH & HYDRATE
GET IT DONE
KNOWLEDGE & POWER
CONNECTION

They aren't another six things to add to your list.

They're a way of checking in.

Where am I now?
What do I need?
What have I been neglecting?
What small action would make a difference today?
And what can I do now that will also support my future self?

After 15 years of working with women, I know that looking after ourselves has to work alongside everything else going on in our lives. It can't depend on having endless time, energy or motivation.

Sometimes your Movement pillar might need attention. Sometimes it's Connection. Sometimes you need to Get It Done.

And sometimes the most important one is simply ME.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to revisit each of the six pillars and explore what they can look like in real midlife, because they sit behind everything I do at Complete Fit.

For today, have a quick check-in.

Which pillar needs a little more of your attention right now?

Sunday is the one morning a week I have the time to get up and out for a long walk.
It feels like a proper dose of fresh air and nature - of which I do get during the week, but in smaller doses!
Today's walk is one we haven't done for a while along the Medway and was all calm waters, reflections.
My reflections were purely on the beauty of the water this morning, but I will be reflecting on the last week or so to prepare for the coming week.

Have a lovely Sunday

This week's blog - "Strong Foundations Aren’t Just for Beginners"

Strong foundations aren't just for people who are new to exercise.

Technique, mobility, balance, breathing and control continue to matter as we get stronger – and sometimes progress means improving how we move rather than simply adding more weight.

In this week's blog, I'm looking at why revisiting our foundations can help us build strength and confidence through midlife and beyond.

Strong foundations aren't something we leave behind. They're what allow us to keep progressing.

Let me know what you think

It's the first of a new month, and Action for Happiness September calendar is:

Self-Care September. Self-care isn't selfish. It's essential.

Will you be making self care part of your September (hopefully every day of the year, but if not, now's a good time to start...)

This week's blog - "You Don’t Have to Wait for a Fresh Start"

Do you need a fresh start this September?

There's something about September that can give us that familiar "new term" feeling – new routines, new goals and a chance to get organised.

But what if you don't need to start again?

Before making a list of everything you'd like to change, take a moment to notice what's already working.

The movement you've done counts. The strength you've built counts. The times you've chosen to rest and recover count too.

September can be a fresh start if you'd like one – but it can also simply be the next page.

In this week's blog, I'm looking at how we can keep building on our foundations without constantly going back to the beginning.
Let me know what you think

I'd love your input:

I've talked a lot over the years about preparing ourselves for midlife.

Building strength. Looking after our health. Understanding the changes that come with perimenopause and menopause. Making time for recovery and self-care. Thinking about how we want to feel as we get older.

But there's another part of midlife that I don't think we talk about, or prepare for nearly enough.

Caring.

For some, that might still mean caring for children or supporting young adults. At the same time, our parents and older relatives may begin to need more from us too.

Sometimes that change is gradual. A few more appointments. Helping with shopping. Sorting some paperwork. Checking in more often.

Sometimes it happens overnight.

And often, all of this is happening alongside everything else we're already managing.

It's something I'm experiencing within my own family, and it's made me think much more about the question:

Can we prepare for caring?

Not because we can predict exactly what will happen, but because perhaps there are things we can know, conversations we can have and foundations we can put in place before we really need them.

It's led me to start developing Preparing for Caring, an idea that is gradually taking shape and that I hope will become a useful collection of information, experiences and practical resources for women navigating this stage of life.

But I don't want it to be based on my experience alone.

I've created a short questionnaire for anyone who is currently caring, has cared in the past, or perhaps knows that caring may become part of their life in the future.

I'd love to hear what you've experienced.

What surprised you?
What helped?
What do you wish you'd known?
And what might have made things a little easier if you'd been able to prepare?

The questionnaire takes around 5-10 minutes. Here's the link: https://forms.gle/qX5izWHYYLFmsMN56

And if you know someone whose experience could help shape this conversation, please do share it with them.

Preparing for Caring feels very much part of what Complete Fitness and Wellbeing has always been about: building strong foundations for the life we're actually living, and the life that may be ahead of us.

No sound - Just awe!

Last week this beauty appeared in my garden, never seen a Hummingbird Hawk Moth before, didn’t have my camera to hand that time, I just watched - I even mentioned in today’s newsletter that I didn’t see it again and then this morning, from the back door I saw something on the Slavia, grabbed my phone, crept out and there it was again!

Benefits of being outside in nature, pottering in the garden - the list is increasing all the time!
