You hit every rep. But how much did you have left? šŖ
Completing your sets is one part of deciding whether to increase the weight. Your effort matters too.
RPE tells you how hard the set felt. RIR estimates how many more reps you could have completed with consistent technique.
š¹ RPE 8 ā 2 reps left
š¹ RPE 9 ā 1 rep left
š¹ RPE 10 ā no reps left
If your programme calls for RPE 8 and you finish every working set with 4 reps to spare, a small increase may be appropriate.
If those same sets leave you grinding out the final rep with nothing left, adding weight probably isnāt your next step.
Judge all your working sets, keep your technique consistent and use your planned rest periods. These estimates take practice, so look for patterns across sessions.
Progress can also mean the same weight feeling easier, cleaner reps or more consistent sets.
