“I Thought It Was Over Before It Even Began…”
At 11 years old, I wasn’t sidelined by a sports injury but by something completely unexpected—a freak accident at a wedding. While running around a gravel car park, in the glorious afternoon sunshine, the ground gave way, and I ended up on the floor, blood seeping through my beige trousers with a searing pain in my knee. The diagnosis? A partially ruptured ACL.
The treatment plan? Do nothing.
That meant over a year in a brace and 18 months with no sport. For an active kid like me, it felt like a prison sentence. I lost touch with what I loved, drifted away from my teammates, and felt isolated and hopeless.
When I was cleared to play again, it wasn’t smooth sailing. My body had compensated for the injury in ways I didn’t understand, leading to further issues down the line. No one was there to guide me through the recovery process or show me that injury is an opportunity.
Fast forward to today—I’m 38, still playing rugby, have completed marathons, and am in the best shape of my life. I’ve thrown away the knee braces and have complete confidence in my body again.
This experience didn’t just shape me as a person but as a coach. I know first-hand how injuries can feel like the end, but with the right guidance and understanding of how the body works, they can become the foundation for an even stronger comeback.
Injury doesn’t have to be the end—it can be the beginning of something incredible.
