Times of classes vary from club to club and per age. Through years of experience, we have taken out the “boring, old fashioned and regimented” training methods to create a positive atmosphere where the children thrive. The model we use incorporates games, fun activities and relatable language to teach the skills of Judo in a different way and helps the children to remember what they need to. We keep our Dojo’s (places of learning) a parent free zone, we have found this to be the most successful way for the children to learn, develop confidence and independence. Why Judo?
“Judo is the best initial sport to train children and young people from 4 to 21 years of age”. UNESCO 2017
Judo is the second most participated sport in the world! Judo is an excellent activity for young kids because it builds healthy and strong muscles early on, improves their cardio, and lowers their cholesterol. Children who participate in judo have a reduced risk of childhood obesity, heart disease, and osteoporosis, even as they leave childhood and become adults. It also sets the foundation for them to become healthy and active adults who appreciate the importance of physical activity. As a martial art, judo focuses on building self-respect, respect towards others, including opponents, and respect towards your teacher. In turn, this nurtures their trust, confidence, and judgment so they can grow as balanced and emotionally healthy young adults. Children’s concentration has been known to increase exponentially after they start practicing judo because they get used to following very detailed and specific instructions from their teachers, paired with focusing deeply on their techniques of movements. My name is Phil Hornby, I have practiced Judo for over 40 years and have loved the sport since the first moment I walked onto the mat. I have achieved, so far, a grade of 4th Dan black belt. I have had a long competitive career, starting off as a junior, to then being ranked in the top 5 in Great Britain as a senior, and following that I have been a member of the Great Britain Masters Judo Squad. I have been coaching for 20 years and I am a certified level 2 coach within the British Judo Association and am a former British Judo Association coach. I am first aid trained, have safeguarding qualifications and have an enhanced DBS.
