Did you know that the word ‘Dart’ is derived from a Celtic word for oak?

So the river’s name likely meant something like “the oak river” or “river where oaks grow.”

You can then guess where the name Dartmoor came from.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day

A bit about a badge I wear quietly on my walks: I’m a trained Mental Health First Aider with MHFA England®.

I’m not a counsellor. But I can listen without judgement, and know where to point someone if they need more support than I can give.

Sometimes the outdoors gives people space to say things they wouldn’t say anywhere else. Having the training to respond well when that happens matters to me.

Just an introduction about me to my new followers.

7 years leading walks across Dartmoor (22
years exploring it) and it still finds new ways to surprise me.

Before that, my boots earned their stripes properly in the Andes, Himalayas, The South West Coast Path and more soggy hillsides than I can count. Turns out none of that fully prepares you for Dartmoor weather, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Expect good banter, and a walk shaped around what you actually want to get out of it - not a rigid script. I read the group, read the weather, and adapt on the fly (occupational hazard of loving a good challenge).

I love that the BBC are helping to make this more mainstream. Breathwork isn’t some airy-fairy thing reserved for us old yoga hippies, it genuinely works.

I regularly teach young people the three-part breath with box breathing during our walks, showing them that it’s something they can use anywhere, at any time, whenever they’re feeling anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, or simply need a little more calm.

There’s science behind it too.

Something so simple, accessible and completely free can make a real difference to how we feel.
