🔴⚪🔴⚪ END OF SEASON 🔴⚪🔴⚪

That’s a wrap on the season for the lads.

It’s been a campaign with plenty of ups and downs. At the start of the season, we had to rebuild the squad which naturally brought a period of instability, and that showed in our early results. Once things settled, the group recovered well and we saw much stronger performances.

The objective was a mid-table finish, and while we’ve fallen short of that ending in the bottom two, the season as a whole doesn’t fully reflect the progress made within the group.

There have been some really positive performances, games where we’ve controlled play, moved the ball well, and shown exactly what we’re capable of. At the same time, key moments have cost us, particularly around taking chances, dealing with set plays, and individual errors that have been punished.

In terms of commitment, the majority of the lads have been excellent throughout, stepping up, improving, and sticking together during the tougher periods.

We’ve also seen strong individual development across the squad, with players stepping into new roles, returning from injury, and others stepping in out of position when needed, all whilst some of them stepping onto the first ladders of the working careers.

As always, there will be changes. This brings an end to the journey for some players, and we thank them for their efforts this season. At the same time, we’ll be looking to strengthen and bring new players in as we build towards next season.

A massive thank you to our sponsors Northumbria Financial Management Ltd & Blue Horizon Partners for their continued support, it’s hugely appreciated and makes a real difference to the group.

Thanks to everyone who’s supported us this season, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

There’s a strong base here, and we know there’s more to come from this team.

Lads keep pushing into next season, well done boys!

🔴⚪🔴⚪ MATCH REPORT 🔴⚪🔴⚪

The final game of the season saw the lads finish with an entertaining 1-1 draw against a strong Hetton side.

Both teams played at a high level and moved the ball well throughout. Hetton had the better chances in the first half, but Maz Hylton pulled off a number of excellent saves to keep us in the game and level at 0-0 going into the break.

Hetton started the second half brightly, but Westend gradually grew into it and began to take more control. The breakthrough came on 52 minutes, with Jack Hunter finishing a very good volley following a quality cross from Liam Graham.

The game then turned when Lucas Scott mistimed a challenge on the edge of the box, resulting in a penalty. Hetton converted to make it 1-1. The decision was then followed by a red card, which wasn't the right decision with the double jeopardy rule, and even acknowledged after the game by the ref it wasn't the right call.

Despite going down to 10 men, the lads responded really well. The game opened up and became an end-to-end contest, with both sides pushing for a winner. Westend created the better chances in that period and will feel we could have taken all three points given the chances we created, but it wasn’t to be.

Player of the Match goes to Maz Hylton for a consistently high-level performance, particularly in the first half where his saves kept us firmly in the game.

A good, competitive game to finish the season, and overall a fair result.

🅰️ Assist: Liam Graham

The lads head to Hetton for the final game of the season tomorrow, looking to finish on a positive note.

The last couple of games haven’t gone our way, with player availability impacting the squad, resulting in a heavy defeat and a conceded fixture last week.

We go into tomorrow with 14 players available, boosted by a couple returning, and the focus is on putting in a strong performance and finishing the season with 3 points.

While we’ve just fallen short of our mid-table targets, there’s a clear opportunity to end the season the right way.

🔴⚪🔴⚪ MATCH REPORT 🔴⚪🔴⚪

An excellent 4-2 win for the lads tonight on a cold evening under the lights.

A really good game of football between two strong sides. Gateshead took the lead on 27 minutes following a defensive mistake, despite a great recovery run from Jayden.

To the lads’ credit, there were no heads dropping. We responded well, began to take control of the ball, and grew into the game.
That pressure paid off with two quick-fire goals. On 39 minutes, Ashton Cullen produced a worldie after an excellent driving run from defence by Lucas Scott to set him up — two bits of top individual quality.

Just a minute later, Liam Graham made it 2-1, flicking the ball past the keeper after a well-weighted through ball from Lucas Taylor to give us the lead going into half time.
The second half started with Westend in control, and that remained the story for large periods. Gateshead did pull it back to 2-2 on 67 minutes, but the lads kept pushing and continued to look for a way through a well-organised side.

In the end, it was two set pieces that made the difference. Elliott Robson grabbed both goals from corners — the first delivered by Liam Graham on 81 minutes, and the second from Mason Underwood on 85 minutes.

A strong all-round team performance, with those coming on at half time quickly getting up to the pace of the game and making an impact.

Player of the Match goes to
Matty Hall for an outstanding performance in defensive midfield. He protected the back line well, stayed calm in possession, and consistently looked to play forward.

⚽ Goals: Elliott Robson x2, Ashton Cullen, Liam Graham
🅰️ Assists: Lucas Scott, Lucas Taylor, Liam Graham, Mason Underwood

Well done lads

🔴⚪ MATCH REPORT 🔴⚪

A frustrating game for the lads today, falling to a 4-3 defeat in what was a scrappy contest overall.

There were a few talking points, including a goal that was clearly offside for Whickham, but we have to look at ourselves and what we can control first. We conceded three goals from set plays, areas we know we need to deal with better. A free header from a free kick which is disappointing, and a goal following a keeping error with our stand in keeper.

We also struggled to control the game in the same way we did last week. There were spells where we moved the ball well, but overall we found it difficult to build momentum and linking our normal style of play. Whickham playing long and direct at every opportunity whilst constantly looking for free kicks which wasn't pretty to watch but effective in getting 3 points.

On the positive side, it was great to see Lucas Taylor back and firing. He played the full 90 minutes and led the line really well. Lucas grabbed all three goals, a well-taken penalty, a composed finish after being set up by Liam Graham, and a sharp reaction to finish following an effort from Ethan Marsden. He also had two efforts cleared off the line.

Not the result we wanted, but there are clear lessons to take, particularly around dealing with long balls and set pieces.

We move on with four games remaining and a mid-table finish still the target.

Player of the Match goes to Lucas Taylor — not just for the hat-trick, but for his overall performance leading the line.

Here’s your matchday squad and starting XI for tomorrow’s away fixture against Whickham Fellside.

The lads will be looking to continue their strong run of form and build on last week’s 4–3 win over the same opposition.

With five games remaining, the turnaround since December has put our mid-table targets firmly back within reach, and tomorrow is another big opportunity to keep that momentum going.

🔴⚪🔴⚪ MATCH REPORT 🔴⚪🔴⚪

Another 3 points for the lads today, making it 3 wins from 4

The score line flatters Whickham Fellside, as Westend were dominant for large parts of the game, controlling possession well and moving the ball with real quality.

We went into half time 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Liam Graham, with a well taken chance and the second finding its way across the line after the keeper saved, easily had a hattrick on another day.

Whickham started the second half brighter and pulled one back on 52 minutes, but the lads responded well with Mason Underwood restoring the two-goal lead on 61 minutes.

The game then turned into a crazy spell late on, with Whickham scoring twice in quick succession on 78 and 85 minutes to make it 3-3.

However, the lads showed great character and didn’t let their heads drop, Jack Hunter stepping up in the 89th minute to finish and secure a deserved 4-3 win.

We created plenty of clear chances throughout and on another day could have been out of sight earlier, but overall a strong and positive performance.

Great to have both Lucas and Tyler back involved. Tyler put in a very good performance after time out through work and injury, while Lucas came close to getting himself on the scoresheet and worked hard on his return.

Rylan Urwin takes Player of the Game again — stepping in as a makeshift keeper and putting in another solid performance (not bad for a wide player! 😂)

⚽ Goals: Liam Graham x2, Mason Underwood, Jack Hunter
🅰️ Assists: Matty Hall x2, Tyler Facey, Elliott Robson

We go again next week away to Whickham Fellside Yellows for an early 8:45am kick off — looking to repeat today’s performance and pick up another 3 points.
