A spirited and hard-fought performance from our Ryhope CW FC U9 Reds wasn't quite enough today, as a clinical Hetton Juniors U9 Inter took the spoils in an entertaining encounter. Despite the scoreline, the match was packed with moments of individual brilliance, woodwork-rattling drama, and immense defensive bravery from the boys in red.

We started the match on the front foot, pressing hard for an early opener. Thomas M saw a powerful effort well blocked by the Hetton defence, before Leo hit a dangerous free kick just wide of the left post.

Our early dominance paid off in the 6th minute. Leo did brilliantly on the left flank, delivering a pinpoint cross into the box to find Lenny, who calmly slotted the ball into the left side of the goal to make it 1–0.

Looking to double our advantage, Preston and Lincoln both forced smart saves from the Hetton goalkeeper. However, in the 11th minute, Hetton equalised against the run of play. Cutting in from the left on their very first meaningful attack, the Hetton forward unleashed a powerful drive that went in off the crossbar to level the scores at 1–1.

We responded positively. Leo had a shot saved in the left corner, while Preston and Thomas M both saw free kicks go agonizingly close—Preston’s effort missing the angle of the post and bar by mere inches.

At the other end, Hetton remained a threat. After Oliver made a solid save in the centre of his goal, a short back-pass looked destined to give the visitors the lead. With the ball fired towards an empty net, Thomas M produced an absolutely unreal piece of defending, somehow jumping to block the ball on the line.

Just as it looked like we would head into the break level, Hetton struck a cruel blow in first-half added time (25+1'), firing an unstoppable shot high into the net to make it 1-2.

Half time

The second half began with Oliver under immediate pressure in the Ryhope goal. He made two quick saves—one at his near post—before producing a truly stunning stop to tip a powerful Hetton strike onto the crossbar.

Unfortunately, the pressure finally told in the 33rd minute. Oliver made another initial save, but a frantic goalmouth scramble saw Hetton hit the right post before the ball broke kindly to an attacker, who buried it into the bottom left corner to make it 1–3.

Five minutes later, luck deserted us again. As Hetton cut in from the left, a defensive toe in the tackle accidentally took the ball away from the advancing Oliver, leaving an easy tap-in into an empty net for 1–4.

Oliver kept us in the contest with a string of fine saves, particularly from a dangerous corner, while Thomas M continued to put his body on the line with a superb sliding block tackle.

In the 46th minute, Hetton added a fifth after we turned the ball over trying to dribble out from the back. The ball was squared quickly across the box and fired into the top right corner.

To our boys' immense credit, heads never dropped. After Oliver made another fine save from a crowded free kick, we got the reward our fighting spirit deserved in the 49th minute. After Lenny was fouled, Leo stepped up and smashed an unstoppable free kick high into the roof of the net to pull it back to 2–5.

There was still time for one final bit of drama when Thomas M went clean through on goal, only to be hauled down from behind. The referee deemed the foul to be just outside the area, and Thomas M’s subsequent free kick cleared the crossbar just before the final whistle blew.

Full time

A tough result on paper, but a performance the boys can be incredibly proud of. On another day, the fine margins would have been in our favour. We dust ourselves down and move on to the next one!

It was a tough, high-tempo start to the match as Chester-le-Street piled on the early pressure. Oliver was called into action almost immediately, making a sharp save at his near post. The visitors continued to push, rattling our crossbar and firing a succession of shots wide and over as we fought hard to keep them at bay.

Oliver remained incredibly busy, making a fine save to his right, while Preston showed great defensive awareness to deflect another goalbound effort wide right.

Despite our resilient defending, Chester-le-Street broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Following a quick kick-in, they managed to find space and slot the ball into the right side of the goal to make it 0-1.

Oliver kept us firmly in the contest with two fantastic high saves to deny powerful strikes, while Chester-le-Street also sent an effort over the bar from a corner.

As the half progressed, we began to find our footing and create chances of our own. Lincoln saw a well-struck effort saved in the bottom left corner, and Thomas M was denied from a central area after getting on the end of a quick kick-in. Lenny then made a brilliant, driving run through on goal, but the opposition goalkeeper reacted quickly, diving bravely at his feet to smother the ball just in time.

Just before the whistle in the 25th minute, Chester-le-Street doubled their lead. Leo pulled off a brilliant block to stop the initial shot, but unfortunately, the rebound fell kindly for the attackers and was smashed high into the net to send us into half-time 0-2 down.

Half time

The second half started much like the first, with Chester-le-Street looking to extend their advantage. Oliver made another high save before executing a brilliant double-stop—first a shot was blocked by our defence, and Oliver quickly reacted to smother the rebound in the right side of the goal.

In the 35th minute, Chester-le-Street got their third, cutting in from the left wing and firing a high shot into the roof of the net to make it 0-3.
Instead of letting our heads drop, we responded instantly with the goal of the game just two minutes later.

In the 37th minute, the ball broke loose just outside the area, and Thomas M reacted fastest, striking it first time with a magnificent curling shot that sailed into the top right corner to pull it back to 1-3.

The goal gave us a massive lift, but Chester-le-Street continued to threaten.

Oliver pulled off the save of the match, leaping high to tip a ferocious shot onto the crossbar.

Moments later, Thomas M showed incredible desire, throwing his body in front of a goalbound strike before Oliver gathered the resulting deflected effort.

As the clock ticked down, Chester-le-Street missed a couple of targets wide left, but Oliver was required to make more crucial saves—two high, one to his left, and two right down the centre—to keep the scoreline tight.

Our explosive start caught Clegwell cold in the very 1st minute. Awarded a free kick, Preston stepped up and unleashed a powerful strike that rattled off the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line to give us a 1-0 lead.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, we launched a relentless wave of attacks. Oscar saw a sharp effort saved at the near post, Preston had a high shot tipped away, and Leo was denied by the Clegwell goalkeeper's legs.

Clegwell carried plenty of threat on the break, forcing Oliver into a smart save at his near right post. We immediately countered straight up the other end from the clearance, with Lenny seeing his shot saved. Preston and Lincoln continued to test the opposition, with Lincoln having a goalbound effort well saved.

The pressure told in the 8th minute when Lincoln turned provider, clipping a brilliant ball to Oscar, who caught it perfectly on the volley to smash it into the top left corner to make it 2-0.

Further chances fell to Preston and Thomas M as we looked to completely dominate, but Clegwell remained dangerous. Oliver showed fantastic bravery in our goal, coming out quickly to close down a rushing attacker and making a vital save with his legs.

Just before the break, a failure to clear our ball from danger invited pressure. In the 20th minute, Clegwell capitalised by firing a powerful shot into the left side of the net, leaving us with a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Half time

We restarted with high intensity. Preston beat his man on the right wing and sent a beautiful cross to the back post, where Oscar’s dynamic shot was saved. In the 26th minute, a similar formula yielded perfection: following a quick kick-in, Preston attacked down the right flank and whipped a cross into the box. Lincoln timed his run flawlessly, meeting it with a superb first-time finish to extend our lead to 3-1.

The Clegwell goalkeeper kept his team in the game with a string of heroic saves, denying Lincoln twice, stopping Oscar after a great cross from Leo, and tipping away another Oscar effort after Lincoln unlocked the defense with outstanding vision on a through ball. Thomas M also went close, sending a shot just wide right.

Against the run of play in the 35th minute, we lost possession at the back, and Clegwell punished us instantly, slotting a shot into the right side of the goal to narrow the scoreline to 3-2. Moments later, a dangerous Clegwell cross flashed right across the face of our goal—a massive wake-up call for us!

Our response was clinical. In the 41st minute, we scored a brilliant team goal playing out from the back. Oliver, Preston, and Leo started off the move with crisp passing before Lincoln played Oscar through on goal. Oscar made no mistake, confidently finding the bottom left corner to make it 4-2.

Two minutes later, in the 43rd minute, the points were safely wrapped up. Lees tried his luck from distance, and his powerful shot proved too hot to handle, squirming through the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net for 5-2.

Clegwell fought until the whistle, shooting wide right and forcing Oliver into one final, solid save at his near left post, but we held firm to secure a fantastic win.

The match opened with NES Lions putting immediate pressure on our defence. An early NES shot flashed wide right, signalling their attacking intent.

Oliver, was called into action shortly after, making a sharp save at his left-hand post. Our defensive unit stood firm under pressure, highlighted by a brilliant block from Oscar to deny a certain goal, followed quickly by a sigh of relief as a NES cross-shot rattled our left post.

Oliver continued his busy start, pulling off another save, this time to his right.

However, the pressure finally told in the 6th minute. Caught in a 3v1 disadvantage, we watched as NES shifted the ball efficiently, culminating in a clinical strike into the top right corner to put us a goal down.

We looked for an immediate response. Finley forced a save from the NES keeper on the left side of the goal. At the other end, Oliver remained a crucial barrier, saving a central effort to keep the deficit at one. After Finley fired wide right, we finally found our breakthrough.

In the 9th minute, Finley won a tackle and moved down the right channel unleashing a brilliant strike into the top left corner to equalise for us!

Our joy was short-lived, however. Just two minutes later, in the 11th minute, NES retook the lead, exploiting a 1v1 situation to slide the ball past the oncoming Oliver.

We fought hard to level things up again. Finley dragged a shot wide right, and after we won a free kick following a foul, Leo's ambitious effort flew high and wide to the left.

Lenny was next to try his luck, firing wide right, before Oscar saw his shot in the left side of the goal saved by the NES keeper.

As we pushed bodies forward, we were caught on an overload in the 15th minute, allowing NES to extend their lead with a composed finish into the left side of our goal.

Oliver kept us in the contest with another central save, and we rode our luck as NES shot wide left, clipped the top of our crossbar following a successful high press, and fired another free kick wide left.

Oliver made yet another central stop, but in the 24th minute, fortune favoured the visitors. A NES free kick squirmed through Oliver's hands to find the back of the net.

A final wide-left shot from NES closed out the half.

Half time

We came out for the second half with renewed energy and struck gold in our very first action of the period.

In the 28th Minute Finley turned provider, whipping a cross in from the right wing. Oscar timed his back-post run to absolute perfection, meeting the ball to slot it home and grab our second goal of the match.

The goal gave us a lifeline, but NES continued to threaten. Oliver showed great concentration to tip a high NES free kick over the goal. The visitors then fired wide left following a drop-ball situation.

Oliver was called upon once more, saving brilliantly to his right, and we breathed a sigh of relief as the NES attacker blasted the rebound over the bar.

Our final push for a comeback came through set-pieces and quick transitions. Finley struck a powerful free kick directly into the NES wall; Lincoln reacted quickest to pick up the loose ball, but his subsequent shot cleared the crossbar.

In the final stages of the match, Lincoln turned playmaker, threading a beautiful through-ball into the path of Oscar. Stretching for the ball, Oscar managed to poke an effort towards goal, but it rolled agonizingly wide of the left post.

Despite a much stronger, disciplined second-half performance where we held NES scoreless, the first-half deficit proved too much for us to overcome.
