That's the Island Games done for another year for the Golf Team. Some ups and downs but we managed to equal our best finish of 6th.

We would like to thank our sponsors, The Roe Group and Ishga and our kit supplier Lyle and Scott.

We would also like to thank all those who supported us at our various fundraising events.

And finally a thank you to all the support we have received on the run up and through the week.

This year at the Island Games Orkney 2025 we are going to have a volunteer scorer with every group. These scorers will update each player's score hole by hole as they play each round in an App called 'Squabbit'.

2017 was a challenging week of golf in Gotland. A combination of strong winds and Augusta fast greens provided conditions unlike anything the team had experienced before.

Current team manager DJ Macleod and Neil Rowlands made their debuts joining Bryan Geddes and David Black in the team.

The 2 courses, Visby GC and Slite GC, were world class with Visby regularly sitting in the top 5 courses in Sweden, a quick Google images search will show why.

Davie again was top for the team coming in 25th out of 74 entrants and the team finished 10th out of 18 teams.

Gotland hosted a fantastic games and will hopefully be hosting again in 2031.

2015 was a brilliant week in Jersey and a special one for Kevin Macrae as he was chosen to be the Western Isles Island Games Association flag bearer.

Joining Kevin at the games was David Black and making their debut was Bryan Geddes and Allan Macleod.

La Moye Golf Club and Royal Jersey were the venues and both were in immaculate condition. La Moye was a regular host for events on the European Seniors Tour.

Davie was top for the team coming in 25th out of 76 entrants and the team finished 10th out of 20 teams.

Jersey were great hosts and the weather was superb for the week.

Next up was Gotland! 🏌‍♀️

In 2011 the team of Kevin Macrae, Colin Macritchie, David Murray Black and Andy MacDonald made their way to the Isle of Wight to play over the wonderful courses of Freshwater Bay and Shanklin & Sandown Golf club.

The weather was excellent throughout the week and the standard was exceptionally high with Brandon Robinson-Thompson (now on the DP World Tour) winning the Silver Medal.

The team finished 9th out of 18 teams and Kevin was best placed in the individual event coming tied 22nd out of 71 entrants.

The Isle of Wight were brilliant hosts and the crowds that came out for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were huge and added to a memorable week 🏌‍♀️

2009 the Western Isles Island Games Association went to Aland for the Island Games and struck it lucky with a week of glorious sunshine.

The golf team was made up of Kevin Macrae, David Black, Norrie Macdonald and Andy MacDonald. The two courses at Alands Golfklubb were stunning with lots of water that captured many stray teeshots!

Kevin led the way for the team finishing 22nd out of 74 and was also the top Scot in the field. The team finished 8th out of 19 and were the top Scottish team by 30 shots.

The Aland games was a favourite for many who attended and the islands are well worth a visit if you can.

Our look back today is to Rhodes in 2007 where Andy MacDonald and David Black joined Norrie Macdonald and Kevin Macrae in the Western Isles Island Games Association team.

Rhodes was in the midst of a heatwave and it wasn't just the course at Afandou that was struggling to cope. At times the temperature hit over 50c which certainly was a different challenge than normal for our golfers.

The team came 9th out of 17 Islands and just pipped the hosts who had home advantage. Andy came tied 21st and was the top Scotsman in the event.

Despite the challenging conditions, the team enjoyed the week, the hospitality of the island and meeting competitors from across the islands.

Oh and Andy and Norrie got sent off in one of the women's football matches! They might be the only golfers to have been sent off in the history of the Island Games!

With a week to go until the team fly over to Orkney for the Orkney Island Games 2025, we thought we would take a look back at previous games over the next few days.

In 2005 the Western Isles Island Games Association made their debut in the International Island Games in Shetland.

The Golf team was made up of Norrie Macdonald, Kevin Macrae, Colin Macritchie and Murdo "Griddy" Macleod.

Testing conditions and challenging logisitics made it a tough week but the team played superb throughout and did the Western Isles proud.

Coming 7th and 13th respectively, Norrie and Colin were the top Scottish players in the individual event.

In the team event, the Western Isles came 6th, just behind the hosts.

A week to remember for the team and a week that would act as an inspiration for others to make the team in the games to follow.

Our final member in our meet the team is DJ Macleod.

DJ currently plays off a handicap of 1.6 and the Orkney Island Games 2025 will be his 3rd time representing the Western Isles Island Games Association. DJ joined Stornoway Golf Club in Primary School and has won many titles throughout his years there.

His favourite golf course is the Old Course at St Andrews which he was fortunate enough to play on a perfect day and had a day to remember with his Dad playing too.

Further to that amazing experience at St Andrews, DJ's favourite golfing highlights are getting to a +1 handicap, previous Island Games experiences and golf trips with pals.

DJ does harbour ambitions to attempt Open Qualifying one day like his doppleganger Peter Finch Golf however the Island Games is his main focus for now.

Away from the golf, DJ is a huge NFL fan and supports the struggling Miami Dolphins! Maybe this is their year....🤔

DJ is a talented musician and also a bit of a gamer which he says is just to keep up with his kids!

Hoping for some great weather in Orkney DJ can't wait to represent Wiiga Golf again, competing at a high standard and hopefully seeing the golf team take home a medal.
