Many congratulations to Robin Hall and his young pup, Jake (Caningaege Legal Retrieval at Bluways) who took part in the Society’s recent training days in the Cotswolds led by Rachel Birch and Graham Clelland. Robin and Jake worked hard between the two Working Flatcoated Retriever Development Programme training days and were rewarded by achieving both Foundation and Level 1 passes.
Well done Robin and Jake, great partnership!

OUR DOGS has just received the following press release from The Royal Windsor Championship Dog Show ....

Important Update Regarding Thursday’s Show Schedule

The Royal Windsor Championship Dog Show Committee wishes to inform all exhibitors, visitors, judges, officials, and trade stand holders that, following the forecasted severe weather warning for Thursday, the Committee has taken the difficult decision not to open the showground to exhibitors or visitors on Thursday, the 25th June 2026

The safety and welfare of everyone attending the event, along with the well-being of the dogs, must remain our highest priority. After careful consideration of the predicted conditions, we believe this is the most responsible course of action.

To accommodate the affected classes, the judging schedule has been revised as follows:

• Terrier Group judging will now take place on Saturday 27th June 2026

• Hound Group judging will now take place on Sunday 28th June 2026

In addition, on all remaining show days:

• The showground will open at 6:30am.

• Judging in all rings will commence at 8:00am.

We appreciate that this change may cause inconvenience and disappointment, and we sincerely apologise for any disruption to your plans. We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through these challenging circumstances and do our utmost to ensure the show can proceed safely and successfully.

We would like to thank all exhibitors, visitors, officials, volunteers, and supporters for their cooperation and continued support.

Further updates will be communicated through the show’s official channels as necessary.

The Royal Windsor Dog Show Committee

PLEASE NOTE: JUDGING IN ALL RINGS STARTS AT 8AM

Sean writes the following

I fell in love with Flatcoated retrievers while on holiday in Scotland in 2001. My wife and I stayed at a farm B&B which had a flattie and it was the most beautiful dog breed I’d ever seen - you didn’t get them in South Africa where I’d grown up. But then we had children and a busy lifestyle more suited to cats. When the last of our cats had gone to the “kennel in the sky” and I was spending more time working from home, it was time to fulfil my dream.
I contacted Jan at the Flatcoated Retriever Society Rescue Rehoming and Welfare thinking maybe there was an owner who had to return to work post covid.
I patiently waited 7 months but then Jan found us Master J, a 1yr old young boy whose owners were emigrating. He was everything I wanted - a magnificent, fun, playful, patient boy but he’d grown up with another dog and I was worried about him being lonely if we popped out to the shops or dinner.
So a few months later, Jan found us Mrs B, a delightful old girl who had had litters.
She was overweight with some rotten teeth, smelly breath and no clue about treats or toys. It was sad to see, but those problems are now all behind us and she’s a very happy girl. They are wonderful together and I’m forever grateful to Jan and the Flatcoated Retriever Society Rescue Rehoming and Welfare for making more than a dream come true - two flatties, not one 😉

I would like to say that no one could have been more patient and respectful of our decisions or have provided a better home.
Sean was so excited but sensibly quite understood when I said a couple of older Flatcoats needed a more experienced home and the right Flatcoats would come along for him if he was prepared to wait.
Thank you Sean and family.
Jan

We’re delighted to say that Tanya Beard & Tychosmoon’s Light The Way have achieved the Foundation Level of the Society’s Working Flatcoated Retriever Development Programme.

Foundation Level is a huge achievement. It covers the foundation skills of all gundog work including basic obedience, heel work, sit stay, recall including recall from distractions, steadiness to thrown canvass dummies and tennis balls, retrieving canvass dummies and tennis balls, marking (handler and dog), retrieving canvass dummies and tennis balls (unseen/memories), delivery to hand, introduction of stop whistle, introduction of hunt whistle and introduction to casting left right and back.

Huge congratulations Tanya and Nova! We look forward to seeing where you journey to from here!

FLATCOATED RETRIEVER SOCIETY
52nd Breed Championship Show & Breed Open Show
Saturday 13th June 2026

The Show Secretary and the Show Sub Committee would like to congratulate all those.
who competed at the Shows on Saturday at the Kennel Clun Building in Stoneleigh.

I think everyone will agree this is one of the best venues, everything is on site and quite entertaining this year as the Chows next door also had their show under a beach theme!
The rosettes as always looked amazing and very attractive against the black dogs and co-ordinating with the green venue.

It was lovely to see so many flatcoats and their owners and really encouraging to see lots of new faces. I was pleased to see good sportsmanship throughout and lovely temperaments in the dogs.

The raffle made a profit of £134, so thank you for all those who donated prizes, as it all helps to go towards making this show successful and retaining the low cost of entry fees.

Thank you to the judges Mrs G Gwilliam (Championship Show) & Ms Nicole Coe (Open Show) and Claire Leavy judging Junior Handling, and of course the stewards, committee and some very willing volunteers who helped both the night before and on the day to make this happen.
