Last minute invitation to fish a very posh beat of the Spey.

Drive to station, train to Gatwick, cheapie flight to Inverness.

I am very unlikely to catch anything. So why do it?

Obviously meeting up with my son, but this is also where fishing gets a little Zen.

There is skill in wading, in casting a fly. There is knowledge and care in preparing your tackle for use. There is a calm mental readiness, in case your lottery ticket comes up and you do hook one. A readiness that will likely be unfulfilled.

Others say it is the scenery, the flowers, the Highlands that tempt them to spend silly money on chasing a near extinct species that has stopped eating as it enters a river.

Not me. I want to be that sniper with one shot. Single minded. Effort, effort, effort. The others say they don't care if they blank. I do. And that's where the Zen lies for me. In trying to fish perfectly, even without reward. There is a peace upon my mind when all I care about is a fish that is near impossible to catch.
