My Tips for New Pilates Instructors 🤍

Starting out as a Pilates instructor is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Here are a few things that helped me when I first started teaching:

✨ Focus on the fundamentals
Your clients don’t need the most complicated exercises. The magic is in the basics — alignment, breath, and control. Master teaching these first.

✨ Use clear, simple cues
Keep your instructions short and easy to follow. Clients move better when they aren’t overthinking.

✨ Watch your clients carefully
Teaching Pilates isn’t just about demonstrating exercises. Observe how people move, notice their imbalances, and adjust your cues to help them.

✨ Build your confidence over time
You won’t know everything at the beginning — and that’s okay. Every class you teach makes you a better instructor.

✨ Create a welcoming atmosphere
Clients come for the workout, but they stay for how you make them feel. A warm, encouraging environment makes all the difference.

✨ Never stop learning
Take workshops, keep studying movement, and stay curious. The best instructors are always students too.

Why Breathwork Is So Important In My Pilates Classes 🤍

One thing I always start my classes with is breath.

We begin by placing one hand on the heart and one hand on the belly, simply taking a few moments to slow down and connect with our breathing. It’s a way to arrive in the room, switch off from the outside world, and bring awareness back to the body.

From there, we move into Pilates breathing.

✨ What is Pilates breathing?
Pilates breath focuses on lateral breathing, where you breathe deeply into the sides and back of the ribcage while gently engaging the core.
• Inhale: expand the ribs wide.
• Exhale: knit the ribs together and activate the deep core.

This helps support the spine, improve control, and create stability during movement.

At the end of every class, we slow things down again with 3–4 minutes of box breathing in a supine position.

✨ What is box breathing?
Box breathing is a simple breathing pattern used to calm the nervous system. It follows four equal parts:

• Inhale for 4 counts
• Hold for 4 counts
• Exhale for 4 counts
• Hold for 4 counts

Then repeat.

This technique helps reduce stress, regulate breathing, and bring the body into a relaxed state before leaving the class.

For me, Pilates isn’t just about movement — it’s about connection between breath, body, and mind.
