More Than Just a Week of Sport

As another fantastic Sports Week comes to an end, we wanted to share a little about what the week is really about and why we believe it is such a valuable experience for the children who take part.

As a martial arts club, discipline, respect and humility are at the heart of what we teach. But these values don’t only belong in the dojang — they are important lessons for sport, school and everyday life.

Throughout Sports Week, the children take part in a wide variety of games, challenges and activities. Some require physical ability, but many require something much more important: concentration, teamwork, communication, determination and the ability to keep going when things don’t quite go your way.

Of course, everyone wants to win — and there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to do your best and succeed.

But learning how to lose is every bit as important as learning how to win.

This week we have had a brilliant group of children with lots of very different personalities. We have had enthusiastic team players, children encouraging one another and some who have had to learn that when a result doesn’t go their way, it isn’t about blaming the referee, the coach or somebody else.

Sometimes you simply have to accept the result, learn from it and come back better next time.

That is sport. And more importantly, that is life.

Sports Week gives us an opportunity to teach these lessons in a fun and supportive environment. The children learn that sometimes they will be the strongest member of the team and sometimes they will need somebody else’s help. Sometimes they will win, sometimes they will lose, and sometimes their greatest achievement will simply be refusing to give up.

There is another side to Sports Week that parents may not always see.

Alongside the children taking part, we also have our next generation of junior leaders learning valuable lessons of their own.

They are discovering that leadership isn’t simply about being in charge. It is about keeping a team motivated, encouraging the quieter children, managing different personalities, staying positive when things become difficult and setting the right example even when they are tired themselves.

Our junior leaders have certainly had their work cut out for them this year!

They have risen brilliantly to the challenge, shown maturity and patience, and gained experience that you simply cannot teach from a book. We are extremely proud of the way they have stepped up and supported both the children and the instructors throughout the week.

We’re fairly certain they’ll appreciate having the weekend off!

Most importantly, we hope every child goes home having had a fantastic week, made some new friends, tried something different and perhaps learned a little more about themselves along the way.

Medals and winning teams will eventually be forgotten.

The confidence to try, the humility to lose, the determination to improve and the ability to work alongside others are lessons that can stay with them for life.

Thank you to all our parents for trusting us with your children and supporting what we are trying to achieve.

And finally, a huge well done to everyone involved.

Well done, Team Murcott.

Pulling together, supporting each other and rising to the challenge — as always.

Our fun sports week “SOLD OUT”again, and day one was a good start. No computers or electronic games, just kids having fun, keeping active, winning, loosing but most of all learning to work as a team, making new friends and lots of memories. 🤜💥

If Taekwondo was easy all your friends would be doing it.
Be a leader not a follower.

The crab effect—more commonly known as crab mentality or crabs in a bucket—describes a dynamic where people try to stop others from succeeding or moving ahead. It follows the idea: "If I can't have it, neither can you." The name comes from real crabs in an open bucket. When one tries to climb out, the other crabs pull it back down, so all of them stay trapped.
