Waking Up to Mental Health
Checking in with yourself

Every morning, we wake up and check the weather, our phones, our plans -
but how often do we check in with our minds?

Mental health isn’t something that switches from “fine” to “not fine.”
It’s a spectrum - a journey - with subtle signs along the way:

Calm → Stressed → Overwhelmed → Numb.
Connected → Withdrawn → Isolated → Hopeless.
Rested → Tired → Exhausted → Burned out.

Sometimes the changes are quiet.
You stop laughing as much.
You lose focus.
You feel detached from the things you love.
That’s your mind asking for care - not silence.

What to do?
Today, let’s wake up to our mental health.
Notice the small shifts.
Listen to yourself and others without judgment.
Reach out early — for help, for rest, for connection.

Good mental health isn’t the absence of struggle -
it’s the presence of awareness, compassion, and support.

You’re not alone. 💚

✨ Don’t underestimate the power of spending time with yourself ✨

I recently took myself off on a 3-day break to Spain - the first time I have ever travelled solo for leisure. I was apprehensive. Could I do the meals out on my own and the solo sun lounger? Turns out - yes I absolutely could! It was uncomfortable and liberating - all in one go. I even sat on my own in a bar and got up to do some karaoke - after a drink or four 🤭 which inspired a couple of other ladies to get up and do the same. I came home feeling happy, refreshed and empowered.

We give so much of ourselves to others - family, work, responsibilities - that it’s easy to forget the relationship that matters most: the one you have with you. Time alone isn’t selfish; it’s how you refuel, reset, and remember who you are.

You don't have to go on holiday with yourself to achieve this! Here are some easy, powerful ways to spend time with yourself that will both empower you and nurture your soul:

🌿 Go for a mindful walk – leave the headphones behind, notice the sounds, the colours, the rhythm of your breath.

📖 Journal your thoughts – let the pages hold your worries, dreams, and truths without judgement.

☕ Enjoy a solo ritual – a morning coffee, evening tea, or candlelit bath done slowly and with presence.

🎶 Create your soundtrack – listen to music that lifts you, grounds you, or simply makes you dance in the kitchen.

✍️ Learn or try something new – a craft, a language, a recipe; reminding yourself you can always grow.

🧘 Practice stillness – through meditation, deep breathing, or simply sitting in silence.

🌌 Dream without limits – take time to imagine the life you want and what would truly make you feel alive.

When you invest in time with yourself, you strengthen the foundation that everything else in your life rests upon.

"Be flexible with yourself. Discipline may look like strength, but true resilience is found in the soft adjustment, and ...

"Be flexible with yourself. Discipline may look like strength, but true resilience is found in the soft adjustment, and the grace to begin again."

Time is vanishing - and you act as if it isn’t.

Your children are growing fast. The years you thought stretched endlessly ahead are now racing by. You sometimes postpone your own desires, telling yourself you’ll get to them “when things settle.” But life won’t wait. Your future self depends on the choices you make today.

👉 How coaching helps: Coaching puts time back in your hands. It helps you claim space for your own growth now - so you don’t look back with regret, but forward with pride.

You secretly believe you are the exception - and that belief enslaves you.

You may feel like everyone else is coping better, that your struggles are heavier, your dreams harder to reach because of your responsibilities. But motherhood and midlife aren’t curses - they’re part of a shared human story. Believing you’re uniquely stuck only isolates you and keeps you small.

👉 How coaching helps: Coaching offers perspective and normalises your experience. It shows you you’re not broken or “behind,” and helps you reconnect to your strength instead of your sense of exception.

You confuse motion with progress

Your days are full - school runs, meals, work, family obligations. You are constantly moving, yet often wonder: Am I actually moving forward, or just in circles? Busyness isn’t the same as purpose. Without intentional direction, years can pass in a blur of serving others but neglecting yourself.

👉 How coaching helps: Coaching helps you cut through the noise, identify what your progress really looks like, and design actions that align with who you want to become - not just what you have to do.

You worship comfort and it is killing your potential

Comfort looks like keeping the peace, sticking with routines, and not rocking the boat—for the sake of the kids, the partner, the job. But deep down, you know some of that “comfort” is really stagnation. Your soul craves more than laundry, logistics, and endless to-do lists. Meaning lives just beyond your comfort zone.

👉 How coaching helps: Coaching nudges you to step into small, brave experiments - stretching what’s possible while keeping you supported so you don’t retreat back into “safe but stuck.”

Your thoughts are not reality -but they rule you as if they are:

As a woman in midlife, it’s easy to let your inner critic narrate your days: “I should be doing more, I’m not enough, I’ve missed my chance.” These thoughts feel true when you’re juggling family, work, and everyone’s needs but your own. Yet they are only stories - and they will define you unless you learn to question them.

👉 How coaching helps: Coaching gives you the space to notice and challenge the inner dialogue, helping you rewrite the script so your choices come from clarity, not self-doubt.

Hands up if you hate saying no? It seems like it should be such an easy thing to do - but it can be one of the hardest things to do when we've been brought up to believe we owe it to others to serve them - and that saying no is not an option.

Here are five ready-to-use scripts for saying “no” with kindness and confidence, while avoiding guilt. Each is tailored to a different type of situation:

1. Saying No to Extra Work (Professional Setting)

"I really appreciate you trusting me with this, but I need to say no this time. I’m at capacity with my current workload, and I want to give my best to the projects already on my plate. Could we look at reprioritising, or maybe someone else could take this on?"

2. Turning Down a Social Invitation

"Thanks so much for inviting me, it means a lot. I won’t be able to make it this time, but I hope you all have a great evening. Let’s find another day soon to catch up."

3. Refusing to Lend Money

"I understand things are tough right now, and I really care about you. I’m not able to lend money, but I’m happy to help in another way if I can—maybe looking at other options or resources together?"

4. Declining Family Obligations

"I love you and I know this is important to you. I need to say no this time because I have to prioritise my own needs, but I’ll be cheering you on and supporting you from afar."

5. Setting a Boundary with a Friend

"I value our friendship, and I want to be honest with you. I can’t take on that role right now—it’s more than I can manage. I hope you understand, and I still want us to keep spending time together in ways that work for us both."

I Will Wave You on Your Way

Today, I will wave you on your way, my boy
your oversized bag tugging you backward and down –
even as you head forwards and up.

You push on through,
all determination and perseverance –
qualities I know you are made of.

Yet my knees feel weak for you,
my heart weaker still,
especially when you turn and offer that nervous smile.

My heart is wide open,
and you take it with you
as you are swallowed by the navy-blue sea of the unfamiliar,
stepping toward your new normal.

In that moment,
a soulful tug of war ensues between me
and the gates you are fast approaching.
I don’t want to let go. Not yet.

I think of what will never be quite the same:
the warmth of your small hand in mine,
the sitting-on-my-lap days already gone.
A past I am not ready to release.

Then I remember the truth I knew from the start:
that you were never mine alone.
I remember the joy you bring others
simply by being you,
and I remember my calling
to let you go with grace.

So I loosen my grip.
I watch as you disappear beyond the gate,
my heart wounded – yet alive
with the prospect of your becoming.

I walk away with tears in my eyes,
loose rope trailing behind,
knowing I have not fully let go.
But it is a start.
The start of my acceptance
of your journey into young adulthood.

I will wave you on your way,
and I will wait with arms wide for your return.

Whether you choose to share your day or not,
I will be all eyes, all ears,
all anxious hope.

For I am, and always will be,
your biggest fan.

“The word is not just a sound or a written symbol. The word is a force. It is the power you have to express & communicate, to think, and thereby to create the events in your life.” – Don Miguel Ruiz

Every word you speak – to yourself and others – carries energy.

Your words can build trust, inspire action, create connection… or they can wound, limit, and hold you back.

What you say about yourself matters most.

Are your words building you up or breaking you down?

Are you speaking possibility into your life, or repeating stories that keep you small?

Today, pause and notice: What words are you choosing? Because those words are shaping the life you live.
