John Chapman (1940-2026)

Some very sad news has just reached St Andrews, via Linda Finlay, because John Chapman passed away recently at the age of 85.

‘Jock’ is a St Andrews United legend, having played 281 times for the club, and he was part of some very good teams at Recreation Park. Chapman also collected a Scottish Secondary Juvenile Cup winner’s medal with St Andrews Swifts in 1959 and he was comfortable playing as a full back or as a wing half. Indeed, only 15 players have started more matches for United than John and the little Fifer from Leven was a very popular figure around The Rec due to possessing a hard-working attitude. ‘Chappy’ made his debut for Saints at Grangemouth on the opening day of the 1960/61 season and he went on to win two Fife League titles, the League Cup, the Fife Cup and the Cowdenbeath Cup throughout the next six years.

‘Jock’ also scored 27 goals for the Whites between 1960 and 1966, including hat tricks versus Nairn Thistle and Thornton Hibs, and he was always cheery away from the football pitch. Chapman then played for Newburgh, Blairgowrie and Leven Juniors before hanging up his boots in order to concentrate upon his work as joiner as well as raising a large family. Everyone at St Andrews United would therefore like to send condolences to John’s wife Jenny plus his four children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on Thursday the 4th of June at 11.00am, to which all family and friends are warmly invited.
