How I approach rehabilitation will be different from therapist to therapist.

This is how I like to approach rehab with my clients

75/25 is how I spend my time focusing on the underlying reason of what is causing you to be in pain and the symptoms you are experiencing. It’s okay to just treat the symptoms sure, but that won’t get you anywhere in the long run 🏃‍♂️

Top down refers to you making a conscious effort to think about what you are doing. Bottom up refers to not so much thinking, but instead doing something thoughtlessly

An example would be

Think about squeezing an orange in your hand when you push against the wall (Top down)

And bottom up would be performing plyo push-ups thoughtlessly

Gradual exposure to load is necessary for all tissues in the body. Not enough exposure will create no adaptation, which means no progression, and too much exposure can result in more problems as the tissues can’t handle what is being required of them.

Using performance indicators, such as being able to get 3 sets of 45s isometric holds is a great way to measure how much exposure you need to progress to the next level 💪🏻

Finally and most importantly, giving you the confidence to leave knowing how to manage your daily lifestyle and exercise program to limit the chance of re-injury

What can a Sports Therapist do for you?

A common question I get asked when I introduce myself as a Sports Therapist is “is that just sport massage?”

As a Graduate Sports Therapist I mainly specialise in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal problems(MSK), so your muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones that might be a bit sore and achy!

This does not mean that my patients are only limited to people who play sport. If your lower back or knee has been giving you discomfort through work etc, chances are I can help you out!

I can provide a lot more assistance through injury rehabilitation, manual therapy, strength and conditioning guidance along with education and management of your situation.

So you can leave feeling at ease knowing what’s going on, what you can do, and how long it will take to get back to doing what you need or want to do!

So the answer to the question “is it just sports massage” is NO. Sports massage is another great tool in the toolbox to help aid with recovery, but not the only thing I can offer you

Functional training gets thrown around a lot, anything that isn’t your traditional training method or weird exercise you see on Instagram, is usually put into the category of “functional” training

Being functional is dependent to a task or movement, specific to what you do day to day or for your sport

Therefore your functional training needs to be SPECIFIC

For example, if you want to get better at squatting, you need to squat. Or you want to be able to carry and pick up the shopping with ease, a farmers walk would be a great carryover etc

So remember be SPECIFIC to your own needs
