A 3 week rebuild of the Renault Master Mk1 T35D before Retro Rides Weekender at Shelsley Walsh.

After building a suitable framework we cut the arches off of a rusty mini bus and sectioned these to use to form the basis of each rear quarter. Locker framework was added then locker doors bent up in 2mm steel. Closure panels at the front for future additions and to cover the jacking point on one side, the diesel tank also has a locker cover.

The 4mm ply locker bases were wet laid with carbon kevlar, extra glossy on the underside to please the MOT tester and are for tools on the longer passenger side and camping gear on the smaller drivers side.

The whole back end was painted in a two pack epoxy EM121 which sprayed really well when thinned down 15%. We hope you like the 80’s/90’s graphics too.

To keep the theme of ‘potentially could have rolled out of the Renault factory’ we used Renault Master Mk1 van rear lights and Renault 5 number plate lights. A reproduction set of original dealer number plates and window sticker finishes the truck off well.

And good thing we trucked Green Car to Shelsley as we had a major catastrophe..

Hot Lap at Goodwood!

Now we’re not ones for circuit driving usually (not enough hills) but an afternoon playing on Goodwood was excellent fun.

A test for the oil cooling and ultimately reprimanded and told to slow our pace specifically because we were the 'noisiest car on circuit' and 30db over track limits when giving it the full beans..

Turns out the Renault is a trusty car carrier for Green Car the Rotrex supercharged flat twin BMW bike engined Citroen 2cv and we made it to Retro Rides Week...

A mad collection caper earlier this week resulted in a suitably retro 80’s designed race transporter for Green Car.

It’s a Mk1 Renault Master, ex-Heathrow airport with a freshly rebuilt 2.5 Iveco diesel. A low 225,000 miles but recently coming from a Renault Performance specialist it was reborn over lock down #1.

Some heavy soundproofing and original interior fully reinstated this week, next up are streamlined sidelockers, a canvas rear loadbed cover, a few subtle changes and a retro 80’s race team livery.

The most exciting part of Werrington Park speed hillclimb is building yourself up for taking the “cattlegrid” flat out under full power.

The cattle grid has been plated over with thick steel for the event but even then you are nailing it over the brow of a hill through a drive width gateway with railings either side, it is also part way through a corner with an unsettling lump after it before a rapid deceleration for a 90 degree left.

Here we are in practice on Saturday changing down to 3rd before nailing it through, in our fastest runs on Sunday we were flat out in 4th over the grid before shifting rapidly down through 3rd and 2nd after the lump then provoking the rear end to semi slide the 90 degree.

If you listen carefully you can hear the chassis shock mounts contacting the tarmac after the cattlegrid. Eek.
