Everyone at Copt Heath is delighted to hear that our member, Claire Dowling, has been named Captain of The R&A for 2026/27 - becoming the first woman in history to hold the role.

It is a hugely significant appointment for the game and one that could not be more deserved. Claire has given so much to golf over many years, most notably serving as Captain of the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team in 2000.

Her appointment also continues a remarkable association between Copt Heath and the R&A. Claire’s Curtis Cup captaincy came shortly after fellow member Peter McEvoy captained the Walker Cup sides in 1999 and 2001 - the only known instance of one club providing the captains of both teams in the same era. More recently, fellow members Peter Dawson served as R&A Secretary and CEO from 1999-2015 and Clive Brown served as R&A Captain in 2022/23.

Claire’s appointment is a proud moment for both the club and the wider game, and everyone at Copt Heath wishes her every success in what promises to be a very special year for her and her family.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝗰𝗘𝘃𝗼𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 🏆

England Boys’ Squad member George Whitehead secured a hard-fought victory at the McEvoy Trophy, winning by a single shot at Copt Heath Golf Club.

In a gripping back-and-forth finale, the Hillside player delivered when it mattered most — a sublime eagle on the 15th, a remarkable up-and-down for par on 16, and a nerveless 20-foot putt on 18 to seal a winning birdie.

Whitehead finished just one clear of fellow England squad members Thomas Hartshorne, George Cooper and Alex Boyes, as only two shots separated the top five after 72 holes across two days.

It was a fantastic event for England Golf’s Performance Pathway, as the top-10 players and 18 of the top 20 were all in the National or Regional Squads.
