Achieving the Perfect Freeze:

Why The One-Rack and Aramith Tournament Blacks are the Ultimate Combination.

When it comes to professional pool, a perfect rack isn't just a preference—it’s a requirement.

We often get asked about compatibility and performance, particularly why The One-Rack template performs flawlessly with Aramith Tournament Black balls, and why players may experience issues when switching to other brands like Dynaspheres and cheaper club balls.

The answer comes down to the microscopic level of physics, material science, and intentional engineering.

1. Engineered specifically for Aramith Geometry

Template racks rely on incredibly precise ball-to-ball contact physics. Even tiny, micro-variations completely change how tightly the balls lock together. The One-Rack template rack was designed and optimized specifically around the physical properties and dimensions of Aramith Tournament Blacks. Because the spacing is custom-tailored to Aramith, introducing balls with different structural properties can cause the rack to act more inconsistent or show unwanted gaps.

2. Microscopic Friction & Surface Resin Physics

The ease with which balls settle into a template depends entirely on surface friction.

The Aramith Advantage: Aramith Tournament Black balls feature a specialized Duramith vitrified surface layer. This unique engineering makes them incredibly slick and glass-like. When you push them together on a template, they effortlessly slide past one another and drop perfectly into their respective cutouts.

The Dynaspheres Friction Issue: While Dynaspheres are also made of phenolic resin, they have a slightly different surface texture profile that creates more "grip" or "slide friction". This higher friction can cause Dynaspheres to "bind" or catch against each other before reaching the absolute bottom of the template holes, leaving micro-gaps that ruin a tight freeze.

3. Sphericity Tolerances & "Seating" Depth

To get a perfectly frozen rack, every ball must line up exactly on the horizontal plane.

Aramith holds a clear geometric advantage here:

Tighter Tolerances: Aramith Blacks are engineered to a strict sphericity tolerance of 0.02 mm. By comparison, Dynaspheres Palladium & Titan balls have a wider deviation tolerance of 0.03 mm.

Breaking the Freeze: A template rack works by allowing a specific width of the ball to settle into a cutout. Because Dynaspheres deviate slightly more from a perfect sphere, they sit at infinitesimally different depths within the template openings. If even a single ball sits slightly higher or lower in its slot, it shifts the horizontal contact point with the ball next to it—instantly breaking the tight freeze.

Once you go Aramith Blacks, there's no going back 💪 Aramith - Billiard Balls
