Match Report - Slingsby Utd v Goldsborough
18th December 2023
The Green Army went into this fixture on the back of two victories. With the pitch drying out after last week’s torrential rain, and a full squad including five substitutes to pick from - Manager Steve Walker had every confidence that Slingsby could do the job required of them and rack up a third straight win.
This confidence, however, was tested in the first 10 minutes of the match with Goldsborough having the best of the possession and the best of the chances - their first corner of the match was headed towards goal, hit the post and rebounded straight to one of their players who again hit the post with the follow up allowing Slingsby to restart with a goal kick. As the half went on, however, Slingsby grew into the game, and it was the Green Army that took the lead on 26 minutes with an excellent finish into the bottom left corner from Spud Taylor. This goal was a lesson in patience and composure for the men in Green - first Rio Howden showing great composure in front of goal to play in Spud on the wing and then the goal scorer himself took what felt like an incredible amount of time to pick his spot before executing a perfect finish to send the watching crowd wild. 1-0 to the Green Army at half time!
The second half started much like the first half - debutant Lee Timms (a recent transfer from Union who seems to have played for every team in the division at this point) replaced Rio Howden at half time to provide some extra pace up the wing - but it was Goldsborough who had the best of the chances in the opening few minutes, some great defensive play from Slingsby holding off the onslaught from Goldsborough while forcing the opposition keeper into some great saves (which the referee inexplicably awarded Goldsborough goal kicks for). Unfortunately, the Slingsby defence got ground down as the second half went on and Goldsborough managed to equalise midway through the second half.
Again, Steve Walker looked to his bench for some help, replacing himself in the midfield with Jeff Cooke and throwing on Jermaine Timms for Martin Crick while reshuffling the attack and this change in tactic paid dividends when the attacking trio of James Sawdon, Jeff Cooke & Lee Timms combined to set Spud up for his second goal of the game.
With time against them Goldsborough switched to an all out attacking mentality, repeatedly testing the Slingsby defence and forcing the whole team to present a defensive wall to the opposition. Then, with the last action of the game, deep into stoppage time, Tony Cass pulled off an incredible double save to preserve the lead and try and convince Gareth Southgate to include him in the next England squad.
Final Score - 2-1 to the mighty Green Army, another big W to take us into the Christmas break on a high.
