Match Report - Slingsby Utd v Goldsborough
18th December 2023

The Green Army went into this fixture on the back of two victories. With the pitch drying out after last week’s torrential rain, and a full squad including five substitutes to pick from - Manager Steve Walker had every confidence that Slingsby could do the job required of them and rack up a third straight win.

This confidence, however, was tested in the first 10 minutes of the match with Goldsborough having the best of the possession and the best of the chances - their first corner of the match was headed towards goal, hit the post and rebounded straight to one of their players who again hit the post with the follow up allowing Slingsby to restart with a goal kick. As the half went on, however, Slingsby grew into the game, and it was the Green Army that took the lead on 26 minutes with an excellent finish into the bottom left corner from Spud Taylor. This goal was a lesson in patience and composure for the men in Green - first Rio Howden showing great composure in front of goal to play in Spud on the wing and then the goal scorer himself took what felt like an incredible amount of time to pick his spot before executing a perfect finish to send the watching crowd wild. 1-0 to the Green Army at half time!

The second half started much like the first half - debutant Lee Timms (a recent transfer from Union who seems to have played for every team in the division at this point) replaced Rio Howden at half time to provide some extra pace up the wing - but it was Goldsborough who had the best of the chances in the opening few minutes, some great defensive play from Slingsby holding off the onslaught from Goldsborough while forcing the opposition keeper into some great saves (which the referee inexplicably awarded Goldsborough goal kicks for). Unfortunately, the Slingsby defence got ground down as the second half went on and Goldsborough managed to equalise midway through the second half.

Again, Steve Walker looked to his bench for some help, replacing himself in the midfield with Jeff Cooke and throwing on Jermaine Timms for Martin Crick while reshuffling the attack and this change in tactic paid dividends when the attacking trio of James Sawdon, Jeff Cooke & Lee Timms combined to set Spud up for his second goal of the game.

With time against them Goldsborough switched to an all out attacking mentality, repeatedly testing the Slingsby defence and forcing the whole team to present a defensive wall to the opposition. Then, with the last action of the game, deep into stoppage time, Tony Cass pulled off an incredible double save to preserve the lead and try and convince Gareth Southgate to include him in the next England squad.

Final Score - 2-1 to the mighty Green Army, another big W to take us into the Christmas break on a high.

Goals - Spud x 2

Assists - Rio x 1, Lee x 1

Yesterday slingsby welcomed the top of the league to a wet and muddy game of football. 12 lads of Slingsby FC Vs every man and his dog from Whitby.

With the puddles on the pitch we'd have been better off playing water Polo.

The game started with both teams even and having a few chances on each goal.
Slingsby defence stood and slipped strong to keep the ball out of the net but with poor conditions and an off side, It wasn't long before the green army was one down.

Not to be out done it wasn't long before inform Martin "Bronson" Crick got us back in the game with a tap in after a shot on goal from R Howden.
Not long after a great ball in from Spud saw Crick score another goal and another header.

The away team came at us time after time but only to be stopped by deano who was covering the whole pitch with his tackles and interceptions.
A foul throw from the away team saw a lad slip and slide through slingsby a slot another away to bring the game back to a draw.
As they pressed us again we all thought the next strike was destined to hit the net, until Tony pounced like a tiger to top it wide.
Slingsby back on the attack as spud found himself in the area on his left foot to hit one hard and low, a great save from the away keeper saw the game go into slow motion as the race between R Howden and the GK was on to get to the ball first.
Luckily for us Rio somehow beat the GK and created a cheeky little chip over him to score his first senior goal.

Going into halftime, a sub was made Sam off Jeff on. The message from the manager was to keep fighting and work hard.
Second half saw our defence play in the pond that was now on the pitch.
Like the first half both teams had their chances, but neither team could find the net. Great defending from the home team time after time. With time seeming to be going backwards, and legs getting tired and muscles getting tight. Lots of heart and passion saw us see the game out.

Final score
3-2 win

4th November 2023
The Green Army and Heslerton played out a thrilling 1-1 draw on Saturday to leave Slingsby 6th in the Beckett League 2.
Playing in difficult conditions (on a very wet pitch) both sides had chances in the first half - James Sawdon coming close on a couple of occasions but unable to finish when through on goal, while only some acrobatics from Slingsby’s superstar keeper Tony Cass prevented Heslerton from finishing the first half on a high. As the half went on, however, Slingsby’s bright start evaporated and they had to dig deep defensively in order to prevent Heslerton from taking the lead before half time, the entire team putting a shift in at the back with Martin Crick dropping deeper and deeper to cover his midfield and prevent Heslerton from breaking through, however this meant that James Sawdon ended up as a lone striker and a little bit isolated and Slingsby increasingly struggled to retain possession at the turnover. Fortunately for Slingsby, the half finished 0-0 and they went in at half time with everything to play for and a chance to regroup.
The second half started with more of the same, with Heslerton holding the majority of possession and Slingsby struggling to keep the ball. Just when it looked like the pressure would overwhelm the Green Army, Mike picked up the ball on the edge of his own box and hit a hopeful shot towards the Heslerton area. With their keeper losing the flight of the ball, it bounced once in the opposition area before flying over the keeper’s head and nestling in the back of the net. 1-0 to Slingsby with what will surely be the goal of the season!
This goal revitalised Slingsby and they began to have more of the chances than the opposition - Crick picking the ball up halfway to the opposition area and trying to feed in Sawdon, with only some heroic defending from Heslerton preventing him from getting through to the Heslerton goal.
With Slingsby tiring and Heslerton growing back into the game the manager looked to the bench for some fresh legs - Jermaine replacing Dean at around 70 minutes in. However, just as he looked to make some more changes to kill off Heslerton’s surge Heslerton managed to grab an equaliser with about 10 minutes to play. The remaining subs went back to the bench as Slingsby held on for a well earned point. A draw that in the end felt like two points lost for the Mighty Green’s but played out versus a team currently sitting 2nd in the division - everyone at Slingsby can be proud of their efforts.
Goals - Mike (no assist).

Slingsby welcomed A&S this afternoon for our league fixture.

In the wet conditions and a couple of players missing due to injury, the green army had a switch of formation and it showed to be paying off. Especially in the first half the lads in green seemed to be comfortable on and off the ball and we had a couple of chances at goal.
Unfortunately it looks like shooting practice is needed again.

The back four of slingsby handle everything thrown their way giving our GK little to do.
With constant chances it wasn't long before we hit the back of the net.
With a great ball played from Deano finding the path of spud it was always going to be a goal.

With us one up going into the second half, we really had to dig deep and try to put the game to bed.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be and we couldn't score past the opposite GK. A few subs made to get fresh legs on. As we grafted hard looking for a second, credit to the away team they came out ready to play. They probably had the better of the chances and our defence was constantly being tested.
Both teams back and forth a goal was always coming but from where nobody knew, a scramble in our box and a shot somehow found its way into the back of the net.
The game was definitely on one each and both teams wanted the W.
Back and forth and lots of great defending from both sides saw the game end as a draw.
Probably a fair result, if you don't score you don't win.

Slingsby in league action this afternoon playing host to a young Lealholm side.

The green army started the strongest of the two sides, creating many chances very early.
With lots of great passing from the back into attacking positions it wasn't a very long wait before Crick played a great ball for new signing Henry to cheekily lob the standing GK.

As the game moved on slingsby looked strong and was very much in control of the game.
Playing simple football as a team everyone was involved in moving the ball around nicely.
Attacking once again Sawdon found a great ball this time for Crick to slot one home.
Sawdon could have had a handful of goals himself if he could only hit the target, 6-7 great chances next game bring your shooting boots lad.

Going into halftime with slingsby having to make a big change due to injury. The green army was a little rocky, we blamed the heat and old age but the visitor came to life and made a few chances, finally the slingsby GK had something to do after doing nothing in the first half.
Lots of hard defense work and battling saw us attack again only this time for Batty to be fouled in the area. Up stepped Spud and there was never any doubt. Back of the net for the third game in a row, the lads on fire back in his rightful colours of green.

The game was far from over an offside goal and a simple mistake saw the visitors score two goals back. The last 10 mins was backs to the wall defending. Team effort, grit, heart and passion got us over the line.

The green army of slingsby was back in action this afternoon, playing host to a mixture of union and A&S.
The sun was shining and there was a little wind in the air, it had all the potential to be a great game.
Both teams didn't disappoint anyone watching as everyone gave their all in an end to end battle. Slingsby took the lead as the lads playing some great football out from the back, saw Batty feed a beautiful ball through for Crick to slot home nicely.
With the lead at halftime, the home side made a couple of changes to give a new player and the young lads a good run out. These guys gave their all and did everything brilliantly.
With lots of pressure it wasn't long before the away team got one back. But not to be out done another sub came on to turn a defender and take the ball around the away team GK, just when we thought he would slot it home to an empty net he was taken out from behind to give us a penalty.
Up stepped the former Union man, boom no doubt at all the magician deano got us back in the lead. But in this fixture it was never to end there, after a lack of concentration and not following runners, A lucky strike found it's way into our net. Lots of graft, heart and determination got us through the last ten mins. But that we did and a well deserved draw was fair on both teams.

Final score 2-2

Things didn't quite go to plan tonight and the decision did not go in the favour of slingsby.
The well worked side of goldsborough came to play.

With a few key players missing it meant a few had to play out of position.
Slingsby was always in the game, even taking the lead, the lads in green was playing some great football at times.

Unfortunately after giving a penalty away, and a little mix up at the back. It seemed to cost us the game.
We had three or four chances but was unfortunate to hit the goal.

But there was lots of positive things to take away, this is why we have pre season. It was about learning to adapt when the team isn't at full strength.
Great effort from everyone, we go again Thursday night for training.

Welcome to slingsby FC.

A football club with a rich history and if any man there will bleed green.

Yesterday saw the lads of Slingsby FC welcome goalsports to pre-season friendly.

With a good start to training and some old faces back in the green, the home side was very excited to be back playing football.

The game was a great game from start to finish, both teams having good spells attacking. But the home side was definitely making the better chances and it wasn't long before the first goal was to be put away. The second goal followed soon after.

Going into a great half time talk from the new manager, the lads stepped back to the pitch ready to keep control and look for more goals.
The away team had a few chances at goal only to be stopped by a solid back line and a great goal keeper.

Slingsby sticking to the game plan all game and playing some very smart and silky football, mainly controlled by the lads in midfield who ran the show.
It wasn't going to be too long of a wait for the third goal to come.
After more great defending and playing out from the back, the lads in green were back pressing forward.
One lad one on one, had a chance to give a sixteen year old an easy tap on or goal alone.
He chose to go alone. None the less four goals up.
One last press from the away team to get a consultation. They won a very soft penalty.
Much to the delight of the slingsby captain they hit the post and the captain was on hand to clear the ball away.

Final score
4-0 win
