Most people imagine danger as something that comes from dark alleys and strangers.

But the reality shown by crime statistics is very different.

A few facts that often surprise people:

• Around half of violent incidents involve someone the victim already knows.• Alcohol is involved in a large proportion of assaults, especially late at night.• Many assaults start as arguments that escalate rather than planned attacks.• Crime tends to cluster around certain places and times – busy nightlife areas, transport hubs, and large events.

What this tells us is that personal safety isn’t really about being afraid of strangers. It’s much more about awareness – reading situations, recognising when things are starting to turn, and making good decisions early.

The good news is that awareness is a skill that can be learned and practiced.

Understanding how situations develop – and how to avoid the point where problems begin – is one of the most powerful tools anyone can have.

Absolutely buzzing after a Krav Maga masterclass in London with Benjamin Sarfati.

Benjamin is not only exceptionally well-qualified in Krav Maga, but also jointly runs an amazingly successful MMA factory (Cyril Gane anybody?!) in Paris – and that blend really showed. The session focused on wrestling and how it integrates into Krav, especially in close-range, messy, pressure-heavy situations where things don’t go to plan.

What I really valued was how practical and honest the training was:
• How wrestling concepts help you stay functional under pressure
• How to manage clinch, balance, and control when strikes aren’t the answer
• How Krav Maga evolves by borrowing what works from other disciplines

Hard work, lots of sweat, plenty of learning – and exactly the kind of training that reminds you why you should never stop being a student.

Tired, sweaty, smiling… and already thinking about how this feeds back into my own teaching 👊

Practice, practice, practice. Simple strategies to deal with the situation and get away.
