I’ve spent a good deal of my life trying to become a personal trainer, it started back in 2016 & it has taken me till 2025 to reach that goal (we all have different paths) 📈✅
In all the years of studying I’ve done, there is a HUGE disparity between what you learn from study material, courses, etc to what you learn from experience & DOING the job.
Here are some things I’ve discovered:
- The majority of courses you study are going to be outdated or BASIC. They won’t cover in greater detail the developing trends or research that is being done in the fitness industry or how this affects the job.
- Mitochondria, ball & socket joints, the endocrine system… all these fancy terms & terminology, you will NOT use it with clients. Also, they have NO interest in it (unless they specifically say so). Clients want to get strong, build muscle, lose body fat or a goal specific to them. Breakdown the inner workings of the sympathetic nervous system & you’ll lose them… keep it simple & easy to digest.
- Your course will NOT prepare you for running a business, even though there will be business elements to it. The studying aspect will give you barebones tips on how to “operate” being a PT, but a good 99% of HOW to do it will come from being out there, learning from others who’ve become successes & making mistakes & learning from them.
Whilst it’s absolutely ESSENTIAL to qualify yourself & having that qualification will ensure you’re safe to train others & have a reasonable amount of knowledge on the profession, DOING the job is your true training. Learn the trade by doing & experiencing.
