You've got to read "One Way Ticket" by Rolfe Oostra. A great adventure book about, well, "mishaps and mayhem"! Yes, of course I'm mentioned, in the Mera Peak chapter, but only because I was ill!! No, I haven't written anything this time! He didn't ask 😉. I remember the Australian, though I had forgotten until I read about it. It's a while ago now! 2012?!

Navigation made easy…If you want to learn more, please get in touch!

Just realised I haven’t done a Contours Masterclass yet - but Hand Railing… oh, the saviour of navigation when you’re busy chatting or visibility is poor.

What?
Using a linear feature to keep you on track in the right direction e.g. a wall, fence, river, stream, ridge, or even the path you’re walking on.

Why?
Because it’s simple.
No constant compass work needed - just relaxed, confident movement.

How?
Keep your handrail in sight and tick off features as you go so you don’t drift or get complacent.
Then use a catching feature - something obvious that tells you you’ve arrived, or stops you going too far.

Simple. Reliable. Very effective.

See a lovely example in the pictures below from a walk near Wilderhope Manor today.

See the edge of the woodland on your left...
My tick off features being:
1 Going downhill.
2 A man-made boundary should cross my path.
3 Woodland on my right as the ground flattens.
4 I should start going uphill again.

I was at the trig point. Bonus picture of Scarlet Elf Cup Fungus.
