Kelly's Dance Studio Is Proud to Be IDTA Members πŸ•Ί

When you're choosing a dance school for yourself or your child, you want to know the teachers are properly qualified. That's where the IDTA comes in. The International Dance Teachers Association has been the gold standard in dance education since 1904, making it one of the longest-standing and most respected bodies in the world. It's also the largest organisation of its kind, officially recognised by the Department of Education and Science. That's not a small thing.

At Kelly's Dance Studio, both Keith and Kornelia Kelly hold full membership with the IDTA, which means every class, whether it's your little one's first steps at age five or your own journey from beginner through to Gold medal level, is backed by genuine, internationally recognised expertise. From Waltz and Tango to Cha Cha Cha and Jive, you're learning from teachers who meet a real standard of excellence. So here's something to think about: did you know what your dance teacher's qualifications actually meant before you signed up? And if you're currently looking for classes in the Hampton, Feltham, or Twickenham area, what's the one thing that matters most to you when picking a studio? πŸ’¬

What Do Bronze, Silver & Gold Actually Mean in Dance? πŸ₯‡

If you've heard dancers talk about "working towards their Silver" or "going for Gold" and wondered what that all means, here's a quick breakdown. The medal system in Ballroom and Latin dance is a structured grading framework that gives dancers clear, achievable goals at every stage of their journey. Bronze is where most dancers begin after their beginner foundation, covering the core techniques across dances like Waltz, Cha Cha Cha, and Jive. From there, Silver builds on that base with more refined footwork, timing, and styling, while Gold represents a high level of skill, musicality, and control that takes real dedication to reach.

The beauty of this system is that it works for everyone, whether you're a complete newcomer or someone who's been dancing for years and is ready to push further. At Kelly's Dance Studio, we run dedicated classes for Bronze, Silver, and Gold level dancers throughout the week at St Mary's Church Hall in Hampton (TW12), so you're always learning alongside others at the same stage as you. Not sure which level fits you right now? That's completely fine 😊 our popular 12-week Absolute Beginners course is the perfect starting point before stepping into the medal pathway.

Which medal level are you currently working towards, or is this something you'd love to start? Drop a comment below, we'd love to hear where you are on your dance journey!

What Is the ISTD, and Why Should You Care? πŸŽ“

When you're looking for a dance school, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the options. But one thing that separates a truly professional studio from the rest is whether their teachers hold recognised qualifications, and that's where the ISTD comes in.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing has been setting the gold standard for dance education since 1904. It exists to protect and maintain worldwide excellence in dance teaching, which means when a school holds ISTD membership, you know their teachers have met a rigorous professional standard. At Kelly's Dance Studio, both Keith and Kornelia Kelly are fully qualified ISTD members, with over 40 years of experience teaching Ballroom and Latin in Hampton and across South West London and Surrey. That kind of credentialled, experienced teaching matters whether you're a complete beginner, a parent enrolling a young child, or someone working towards Bronze, Silver, and Gold medal levels. Have you ever thought about what qualifications to look for when choosing a dance class?

Choosing a school with ISTD-qualified teachers means your progress is built on a proper foundation, not guesswork. From Waltz and Tango to Cha Cha Cha and Jive, every lesson at Kelly's follows a structured, professionally grounded approach. And with private lessons available too, there's a path for every learner. What style of dance have you always wanted to try? πŸ’ƒ

Waltz, Tango or Cha Cha Cha? How to Pick Your First Dance Style

Choosing your first dance style can feel surprisingly tricky when you're just starting out, and it's honestly one of the most common questions we hear at Kelly's Dance Studio. The good news? There's no wrong answer, but knowing a little about each style can make the decision so much easier.

If you're drawn to something romantic and graceful, the Waltz is a beautiful place to begin. It's smooth, flowing, and has a lovely steady rhythm that gives you time to find your feet. Fancy something with a bit more attitude? The Tango brings sharp, dramatic movements and real connection between partners. And if you want to start with energy and fun, the Cha Cha Cha is hard to beat. Its name literally comes from the sound your feet make on the floor, and it's one of the most playful Latin styles you'll learn. All three are covered in our Absolute Beginners course alongside Jive, Rumba, and more. 🎢

Which of these three speaks to you most? Or are you completely unsure and happy to try them all? Drop your thoughts in the comments, we'd love to hear what draws you to dance in the first place! Whether you're starting from scratch or picking things back up after a long break, there's a place for you here at Kelly's. πŸ’ƒ

The Dance School That Started Because of One Awkward Corner πŸ’ƒ

Keith Kelly used to get stuck at corners on the dance floor. That frustration sparked a passion, and in 1980, Kelly's Dance Studio was born β€” a family business that has now been bringing people together through Ballroom and Latin dance for over 40 years.

Today, Keith and Kornelia Kelly run the studio together, both fully qualified with the ISTD and IDTA (two of the most respected dance teaching bodies in the world). Between them, they teach everyone from 3-year-olds taking their very first steps, right through to competitive dancers chasing Gold medal standards. Classes cover Waltz, Tango, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Argentine Tango and more, with private lessons available too. Kelly's was even named Dance School of the Year 2023 for South West London β€” which honestly says it all. Whether you're a complete beginner or you just want to stop treading on your partner's toes, this is the place for you. πŸ† What made you first think about learning to dance? Your First Dance Class: Here's What to Expect

Not sure what to wear, bring, or do when you walk through the door for your very first dance class? You're not alone. That mix of excitement and "what have I got myself into?" is something almost every new dancer feels, and the good news is it's much simpler than you might think. Comfortable, well-fitting clothing that lets you move freely is your best starting point β€” think smart-casual rather than anything too restrictive. For footwear, a pair of clean, smooth-soled shoes (not chunky trainers) will help you glide through those first Waltz and Cha Cha Cha steps without gripping the floor. As for what to bring? Just yourself, a little patience, and the willingness to have fun. No prior experience needed whatsoever. πŸ•Ί

At Kelly's Dance Studio, absolute beginners are welcomed onto our popular 10-12 week Ballroom and Latin Courses, where you'll get to grips with dances like the Waltz, Jive, Rumba, and more, all in a relaxed and friendly environment. There are even medals to work towards as your confidence grows! We also have Saturday classes for children, plus private lessons if you'd prefer a more personal approach. Whether you're signing up solo, as a couple, or enrolling your little one, the first class is really just about enjoying yourself. What's the one thing that's been holding you back from trying dance? Drop it in the comments below πŸ‘‡

Ballroom vs Latin American Dance: What's the Difference?

If you've ever wondered whether you want to learn Waltz or Cha Cha Cha but aren't quite sure what sets them apart, you're not alone. Ballroom and Latin American dance are two distinct styles, each with its own character, music, and feel. Ballroom dances like the Waltz and Quickstep are elegant and flowing, with partners moving in a classic hold across the floor. The Waltz, for example, originally an 18th century Austrian folk dance, captures romance through sweeping, graceful movement. Latin American styles are a completely different energy. The Rumba (often called the "Queen" of Latin dances) is slow, sensual, and deeply expressive, while the Cha Cha Cha is upbeat and playful, its very name coming from the rhythm your feet make on the floor. The Jive, born in 1940s America, brings lively kicks and energy that's hard not to smile through. πŸ•Ί

At Kelly's Dance Studio in Hampton, classes cover both styles from the ground up, whether you're an absolute beginner or working towards Gold medal level. Which style sounds more like you? Are you drawn to the elegance of Ballroom, or does the energy of Latin American appeal more? Drop your answer in the comments! If you'd like to give it a go, new courses start regularly throughout the year and are open to all ages and abilities. πŸ’ƒ

They Signed Up "Just for a School Ball." Now They Can't Stop Dancing πŸ’ƒ

Laurie and Liz had never done formal dancing in their lives. No lessons, no fancy footwork, just a bit of bopping at parties. Then their kids' school ball came along, and suddenly Liz needed to waltz with her son on the night. So Laurie tagged along to Saturday sessions at Kelly's Dance Studio to be her practice partner. Neither of them expected much.

What happened next? They fell completely in love with it. Waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, the lot. Laurie (who was "particularly not keen") described Keith as "a born teacher" β€” patient, funny, and brilliant at helping couples get it right, even on the days he had 21 pairs to guide at once. The school ball went beautifully, the kids were brilliant, and Laurie and Liz are now signed up for more classes. That's the Kelly's effect. Whether you're an absolute beginner, a parent dancing alongside your child, or simply curious whether dance might be your thing, Keith and Kornelia meet you exactly where you are at their Hampton studio, serving families across Feltham, Twickenham, Sunbury, Staines, Kingston and beyond. Have you ever surprised yourself by loving something you were sure wasn't for you? Or are you quietly wondering if dance classes could be your next great hobby? πŸ‘‡ Drop a comment below.
