π΄βοΈ MYTH vs FACT: Are Rugs Always Kinder in Cold Weather? βοΈπ΄
β MYTH: Horses should always wear rugs when the weather turns cold.
β
FACT: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to rugging. Every horse is different, and the decision to rug should be based on factors such as:
βͺοΈ Body condition
βͺοΈ Natural coat thickness
βͺοΈ Age
βͺοΈ Health status
βͺοΈ Access to shelter
βͺοΈ Weather conditions
Many healthy horses are perfectly capable of keeping themselves warm, even in colder temperatures. In fact, over-rugging can become a welfare concern, particularly for overweight horses, as it can prevent them from naturally regulating their body temperature.
π‘ World Horse Welfare advises treating each horse as an individual and assessing their needs regularly rather than following a blanket rule.
A horse that is too warm can be just as uncomfortable as one that is too cold. Checking under the rug, monitoring body condition, and observing your horse's behaviour are all important parts of good winter management.
π§Ό And if your horse does need a rug, make sure it's doing its job properly. Dirty, damaged, or poorly fitting rugs can affect comfort, waterproofing, and overall effectiveness.
At CF Equine Group, our professional rug wash and repair services help keep your horse's rugs clean, waterproof, and in top condition. Whether it's a thorough wash and reproofing treatment, or repairing tears and broken fastenings, we'll help extend the life of your rugs and keep your horse comfortable whatever the weather.
