I was fired unfairly and it changed my mind forever about being employed.

That was the point at which I decided I’m never doing this again. I have to start my own business.

All the illusions of having security if you have a job - they shattered.

I hear so many people say that they are scared to take the plunge and work for themselves because they want that security that employment can give you, but truth is - it’s just not there.

Throughout my self employment journey, I’ve always earned enough to support myself. Sure there were busier and quieter months.

That stopped happening eventually when I started to implement personal branding on my socials and more people found out about my business and what I was about.

It enabled me to be consistently busy and also have a waiting list. That’s the sort of security I like.

I now help other small business owners get to the same place.

So what is personal branding anyway and why does every small business need it?

If you don’t currently understand what personal branding is - don’t worry! Neither did I at one stage.

To put it simply, in the context of your business, it’s making sure your potential customers know who you are, exactly what you are about, what you offer, what values you have etc…

It’s about giving your customers enough information about you to form trust and allow them to choose you.

Why does it matter? It matters because unless you show your personality and stand out - it’s extremely hard to sell your product or service unless loads of people know about it already! This is because many people will offer similar to what you do and your offer disappears amongst everyone else’s because it simply doesn’t stand out.

The minute you start to show who you are and stand out - you become memorable. Some people will like you, some won’t - and that’s ok. The important thing is - people will know about your business.

And of course the whole point of doing this is being able to get customers consistently and charge what you’re worth. That’s what it comes down to.

If you don’t know what to post, you’re not alone…

I over complicated as to what to post for so long… I felt trapped by the fact that I couldn’t just take a picture of my work because my first business was home care!

I used to either post stuff that wasn’t really relevant or didn’t post at all!

It wasn’t until I invested in my knowledge and found out about personal branding… that’s when the content I was posting started bringing in more clients.

Instead of showing pictures of my work, I was telling people about how I worked, my approach, why I do what I do, why it’s so important to me and sharing useful knowledge whilst showing my expertise!

All of the above allowed people to really get to know me and see how serious I am about my business.

So if you’re currently in the same boat, start by asking yourself:
- why do you do what you do?
- what does your business offer to others?
- why is what you do so important to you?
- what expert knowledge can you share?

Once you start answering those, you should get more ideas flowing and will be able to create content that will attract clients!

The key is to be honest, consistent and most importantly - yourself ❤️

How do you stay consistent with posting on your socials?

I see business owners ask this question online from time to time and here’s what I think about it.

You’ve got to know why you’re doing it. I could give you 20 strategies on how to stay consistent with it but it comes down to you knowing that it’s an important part of your business and needs to be done.

Yes we’re all human and sometimes life gets in the way, that’s the same for me too. Yes I can not post for a few days or a week sometimes if I’ve been really ill etc - and that’s ok. As long as you’re posting consistently under normal circumstances - you can get away with it.

Now to the actual technical bit. I’ll be honest, some weeks I have a content plan for the week ahead and posts ready to go and other weeks - I sort it out on the day! Both are totally fine.

The most important part is knowing that it’s important and you have to do it. It’s about discipline, not motivation! It’s the same as going to the gym, some days you really don’t want to go but you know you should anyway!

I believe that it's best to create your own content for your business, especially when it's just 1 or 2 of you!

Reason being, all you need at that level is to be authentic and show that you're an expert, show your passion for your business - and no one can do it better than you.

Your content doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to give your potential customers enough information to know what you do and be able to trust you enough to use your business ❤️

Following on from yesterday’s post that triggered a discussion on business forums…

Let’s specify what cold messaging actually is - messaging someone completely out of the blue who has showed no interest in your product or service, and trying to sell to them.

I’ve noticed that there’s a confusion in some people between that and what I’d call recommending yourself to someone through messages because they’ve showed an interest in a product or service similar to yours.

Recommending yourself is also not what I teach my clients and here’s why, but of course before we get into it - if it works for you, that’s great.

When you recommend yourself, you’re asking to be chosen. And if you’re asking to be chosen rather than being the one doing the choosing - you’re potentially showing that there’s no demand for your business and also put yourself in a position where it’s much harder to charge exactly what your product/service is worth.

Why? Because when you do what I teach, which is position yourself as an expert in your field, let your potential customers learn about your business but also get to know your personality (in a professional manner of course) - you’re going to attract people that want you and ONLY you. At that point, you’re not competing with anyone else.

This also allows your business to be in demand and puts you in a position where you get to choose who you work with, purely because you don’t have to take on every single client who comes your way just because you’re desperate for money.

This is what I teach my clients and I know it works because they all get amazing results, just from using personal branding and showing their expert knowledge. No cold messaging or self recommending required.

Let me start by saying that if cold messaging works for you - great. There’s an exception to every rule, including this one.

However, for me personally, cold messaging someone is like turning up at a stranger’s front door, knocking on it and asking to be friends.

What do you think you’ll get in that situation? Exactly, a door slammed in your face.

Why? Because that person doesn’t know you. Doesn’t know your values, what you stand for, what you do…

To me it’s the same with cold messaging someone and offering your product or services.

If I had come across your business in a social media post, it caught my attention and aligned with my values - there’s a chance I’d become a customer. However, messaging me out the blue - prevents that from happening.

That’s why one of the things that I teach my clients is how to create content that brings clients to them, without them having to knock on a stranger’s door 😉.

One of the things that will make or break your business is your attitude towards others.

When people first start their business, as a general rule - they're grateful for every client, recommendation, have nothing but enthusiasm and so on.

However, once the business picks up and they get busy and popular, sometimes the attitude changes. Whether it's towards clients or people in general.

This is a fatal mistake because from that moment on your clock is ticking and not towards something good.

Personal branding isn't just about posting on your socials! It's about who you are as a person and what you translate to the world.

A successful business owner is one who is kind, grateful, treats all customers with equal respect and remembers all the people that have helped them in the past.

I'm honestly not sure why so many people go through this attitude change. All I know is that I've stopped using businesses in the past due to this because no matter how good you are, if you're not treating people with due respect or take them for granted - you don't deserve to have their business.

So if you've read to this part, regardless of where you currently are in your business journey - remember to be kind. Be human. Be grateful ❤️
