Yesterday was spent in academy fixtures.

Watching players.
Observing decisions.
Seeing who can actually perform under pressure.

This is where the real level shows.

Not in isolated drills.
Not in comfortable environments.

But in games — where decisions matter.

The difference is clear:

Some players look good in training…
Others understand the game.

That’s what separates them.

Being in these environments consistently is exactly why I approach coaching the way I do.

It’s not about doing more drills.

It’s about developing players who can actually perform when it counts.

That’s exactly what I’m building with my coaching & upcoming development centre.

Most players are training…

But not actually developing.

Sessions full of drills.
Repetition without understanding.
No real focus on what matters in games.

That’s why so many players stay at the same level.

I’ve seen it first-hand.

That’s exactly why I’m building something different.

A development environment focused on:

Your child isn’t being overlooked.

They’re being outperformed.

That might be hard to hear — but it’s the reality at academy level.

I see it all the time:

Players who:
✔ Train hard
✔ Listen well
✔ Have good attitude

…but still don’t get picked.

Why?

Because effort alone isn’t what separates players.

It’s:
- Decision making
- Game understanding
- Consistency under pressure

That’s what coaches actually look for.

And most players aren’t being trained or guided in the right areas.

So they stay stuck — despite working hard.

Not getting selected.

Released.
Benched.
Missed opportunities.

It happens to more players than you think.

But here’s the reality…

The players who progress aren’t the ones who avoid disappointment —
they’re the ones who respond to it properly.

Most players:
❌ Lose confidence
❌ Drop their effort
❌ Start doubting themselves

But the ones who make it:

✔ Stay consistent
✔ Take responsibility
✔ Focus on what they can improve

Rejection isn’t the end.

It’s feedback.

The problem is — most players don’t know what that feedback actually means or what to do next.

The biggest difference I see between players isn’t talent.

It’s consistency.

Some players train well… when they feel like it.
Some players perform well… when the game suits them.

But academy players?

They show up the same way every session.
Every game.
Every action.

Their attitude doesn’t change.
Their focus doesn’t drop.
Their standards stay high.

That’s what gets noticed.

Not one good performance.
Not one good session.

Consistency.

Because at the next level, coaches aren’t looking for potential…

They’re looking for players they can rely on.

Most players are told to scan…

…but only when the ball is coming to them.

That’s a problem.

Scanning isn’t something you do once.

It’s something that should be happening constantly.

Before the ball.
As the ball is travelling.
Even after you’ve passed it.

Why?

Because the best players aren’t reacting —
they already know what’s around them.

Scanning improves:
- Decision making
- Speed of play
- Awareness under pressure

If you only scan when receiving, you’re already too late.

That’s the difference between average players and academy players.

Start making scanning a habit — not an afterthought.

Most players think scouts are looking for skills.

They’re not.

Here are 3 things that actually get players noticed:

1. Decision making
Can you choose the right option quickly?

2. Awareness
Do you scan and understand what’s around you?

3. Consistency
Can you do it under pressure, every time?

This is what separates academy players from the rest.

Not tricks. Not just hard work.
